The Pediatric Clinical Immunology & Allergy Residency Training Program at the University of British Columbia aims to foster a learning environment that enables the knowledge, attitudes and skills for residents to become comprehensive evidence-based practitioners in either an academic or community-based setting. BC Children’s Hospital is a tertiary care center providing subspecialty expertise to British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon.
The Allergy clinic at BC Children’s Hospital operates 5 days per week providing ample learning opportunities for learners to assess and manage a variety of pediatric allergic conditions including: asthma, food allergy, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, urticaria, drug allergy, vaccine allergy and venom allergy. Sub-specialty collaborative clinic opportunities include: Eosinophilic Esophagitis Clinic and Severe Asthma Clinic.
The Immunology Clinic at BC Children’s Hospital diagnoses and treats children with immune system disorders. Most of these disorders are rare, and present with recurrent infections and inflammatory conditions. Because immune system disorders affect many systems in the body, we work very closely with other pediatricians and subspecialists to ensure children receive the best possible care. Residents in our program see patients in the medical day unit, the outpatient clinic held several times per week, post-Hematopoeitic Stem Cell Transplant, a collaborative Immunology-Respirology clinic, and the Immunology transition clinic held at St. Paul’s Hospital.
The Division of Allergy and Immunology provides weekday on call coverage for the BC Children’s Hospital inpatient consult service.
A mandatory community-based rotation in Victoria, BC is scheduled in second year as part of the transition to practice stage of training, and is supported by UBC with assistance in housing and transportation costs.
The UBC Pediatric fellowship program offers yearly OSCE exams at our center (including simulation), as well as a transition to practice clinic in the final year of training to prepare fellows for the independent practice. The UBC Pediatric fellowship program provides leadership and oversight for a weekly distributed academic half day curriculum shared with 9 other training centers in Canada (Adult and Pediatric programs at UBC, University of Manitoba, Adult program at Western University, Pediatric program at Dalhousie, Adult and Pediatric programs at the University of Toronto, and the Adult and Pediatric programs at McMaster University. Candidates are expected to write the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada examination in Clinical Allergy and Immunology.
Completion of a a research project during the course of the fellowship training program is mandatory and ample opportunities are provided to our fellows wishing to pursue research in clinical medicine, basic science, medical education and quality improvement.
This residency program is for 2 years.
Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.
This is a two-year program currently following the Competency Be Design framework from the Royal College. Core rotations include 10 blocks of training in Pediatric Clinical Immunology & Allergy, 3 blocks of Adult Clinical Immunology & Allergy, longitudinal Immunodeficiency training throughout the two-year program, and 1 block (4 weeks) each of: Laboratory Immunology, Pediatric Respirology, Pediatric Rheumatology, Pediatric Dermatology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation. Elective rotations available include: Pediatric Otolaryngology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Community Allergy, or further months in any of the above core rotations. A senior fellow continuity clinic is held once per month in the final year of training.
There is 1 block of mandatory research early in the program, and further elective time for research is encouraged and may include clinical, basic science or medical education research. An advanced basic science course in Immunology at UBC is mandatory in the first year of the program. Our site participates in a weekly video-conferenced distributed Academic Half day in collaboration with the faculty and residents in the Clinical Immunology and Allergy training programs at the University of Manitoba, Western University and Dalhousie University.
