This two year program currently includes clinical rotations at Vancouver Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital, Royal Jubilee Hospital and Victoria General Hospital. Electives are also organized at other centers including the B.C. Cancer Agency (BCCA), Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH), Lions Gate Hospital (LGH), Richmond General Hospital (RGH) and Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. The organization of rotations is designed to provide a range of clinical experience ranging from quaternary services to community gastroenterology at a major academic health center, in the context of graduated increase in responsibility.
Flexibility is built into the program to allow trainees to tailor training to their specific needs including gaining clinical experience elsewhere or to engage in basic research training.
This residency program is for 2 years.
Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.
The trainees complete fourteen blocks of core clinical rotations and ten blocks of required electives. In addition, the trainees have 2 blocks in their 2nd year of training to choose the electives that suit their personal preferences and for future career growth and development. The core clinical training is divided so that exposure is segmented over a period of two years to allow development of graduation of responsibility.
Each rotation block is 4 weeks in length. The rotations are scheduled in one to three consecutive blocks and are classified as follows:
