This residency program is for 1 year.
Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.
- Block One for all residents will be a combo of Adult anesthesia and our local Boot Camp. This is an introduction to all things anesthesia related mixed with clinical duties. Residents take part in such learning activities as instructions for setting up a safe OR, an airway skills session, professionalism in anesthesia and several other valuable educational opportunities. While participating in this hybrid block, residents will also be assigned call shifts at one of our tertiary hospitals. The first month of call is buddy call alongside a senior FRCP anesthesia resident.
- Tertiary Anesthesia (4)
The adult tertiary rotations are the largest component of the training program. The adult tertiary experience is divided between the Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface General Hospital. Each provides a different case mix and approach, all contributing toward the ultimate fulfillment of the Goals and Objectives outlined above.
- Community Anesthesia (1)
Options include the Victoria General Hospital, the Grace Hospital and Concordia hospital. The community anesthesia rotation has been developed with two purposes. The first is to provide residents with expertise in the aspects of anesthesia practice in a community setting. These goals and objectives reflect the skills and attributes that are necessary for successful practice in a community setting. Therefore, they are essentially the same as the Adult tertiary goals and objectives, with the exception of some surgical subspecialties. However, certain issues take a greater precedence in the community setting such as ambulatory management, and working with limited resources. The second purpose is to provide the resident with an awareness of the nature of practice in a community setting, including differences in caseloads and types and call arrangements.
- Obstetric Anesthesia (1)
Options include the Women’s Hospital at HSC or St Boniface Hospital. This rotation allows the opportunity to spend a concentrated period of time in the Obstetrical anesthesia environment, particularly with staff with a subspecialty interest. It is therefore intended to broaden and deepen the understanding of Obstetrical anesthesia. Residents will have ample opportunity to provide epidural analgesia to labouring patients, and will have excellent exposure to the obstetrical OR.
- ICU (1)
Options include Surgical ICU or Medical ICU at Health Science Centre or the mixed ICU at St Boniface Hospital. This rotation will give the resident an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in managing critically ill patients. Residents will further enhance their airway management skills in a non operating room setting, as well as learning about and performing central vascular access with bedside ultrasound guidance.
- Pediatric Anesthesia (2)
1 block of Rural based Pediatric focused rotation and 1 block offered through the HSC Pediatric OR. Residents will complete this rotation near the end of their year of training and will access to excellent teaching and hands on experience with the Pediatric Anesthesia team at Health Science Centre.
- Rural Anesthesia (2)
One block to be completed in the community resident will be working in and 1 block with the Program Director in Morden, MB. These rotations allow residents to refresh their skills in rural family practice. They will be working in the local practice providing anesthesia for orthopaedic, general surgery, obs/gyne surgeries. They will also be providing on call expertise to the rural ICU and have an opportunity to work shifts in the rural emergency room. Lastly, they will be back in clinic one day each week to see family medicine patients.
- Vacation (1)
May be taken in one 4 week block, or divided into two 2 week vacations. If dividing the vacation up in the two 2 week option, these can only be taken during the adult tertiary blocks (ie, you can’t take 2 weeks off from the 8 week Peds anesthesia blocks)
- Selective (1)
Options include:
- Any of the above mandatory core blocks
- Regional Anesthesia
Regional anesthesia techniques are used extensively at both of the teaching hospitals (Health Sciences Centre, Saint Boniface), as well as at some of the community hospitals and the Pan Am Day Surgery Centre. These techniques are aimed at managing peri-operative pain, non-operative painful conditions and as the sole or combined anesthetic for various surgical procedures. Both single shot and catheter techniques are employed. Ultrasound guidance for these techniques has recently become more common and the training program at the University of Manitoba is working to provide education and experience in this area to residents.
- Chronic Pain Service
The Chronic Pain Clinic at the University of Manitoba consists of the HSC and the Pan am sites. The Pain Clinic provides a comprehensive management approach including multi-disciplinary input, systemic, behavioural and interventional techniques as applicable. Resident will gain an exposure to all aspects of chronic pain management, and should emerge with the ability to manage simple chronic pain problems and understand the issues and principles involved in the management of more complex cases.
- Other Options depending on availability and schedule.
