Dr. Isanne Schacter
Program Director
Deb Stratton
This residency program is for 2 years.
Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.
The first year of the program is clinically oriented. Reflecting the predominantly outpatient nature of the practice of endocrinology, emphasis is placed on experience in the ambulatory care setting. Through clinics at the University of Manitoba’s two major tertiary care centres, the Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface General Hospital, trainees are exposed to a wide variety of clinical problems in diabetes and general endocrinology. As well, they will participate in specialized lipid, diabetic foot, reproductive endocrinology, osteoporosis, and thyroid cancer clinics. Both sites also have an active inpatient consultation service. Additional rotations provide a focused exposure to paediatric endocrinology, reproductive endocrinology, community endocrinology, and the clinical endocrine laboratory. A longitudinal clinic takes place throughout both years, allowing trainees to gain experience in ongoing patient management.
Composition of the second year is flexible depending on the needs, interests, and career path of the individual. Trainees are strongly encouraged to do a minimum of six months, and up to twelve months in basic or clinical research. A biostatistics course is undertaken by all trainees. A variety of elective rotations can be arranged in consultation with the program director.
