Welcome to the University of Manitoba’s Postgraduate Core Training in Adult Cardiology. As a trainee in our program over three years, you will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field of Cardiology. The Cardiology Division is primarily located at St. Boniface Hospital, where interaction with other members of the Cardiac Sciences Manitoba, including the sections of Cardiac Surgery, Cardiac Anesthesia and Cardiac ICU, promote a comprehensive approach to the cardiac patient.
Trainees will be exposed to clinical cardiology (ACCU, wards, consults, and clinics), noninvasive cardiac imaging (echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI), electrophysiology (pacemakers, defibrillators, EP studies and cardiac ablation) and interventional procedures (cardiac catheterization). Our training program also provides for the opportunity to be exposed to advanced heart failure & mechanical circulatory support, structural intervention, cardiac rehabilitation, and adult congenital heart disease. The program further provides exposure to state of the art 24/7 primary PCI care for STEMI.
Our trainees benefit from being part of a relatively small group of residents and subspecialty fellows, who all gain first hand exposure to acutely ill patients and a number of invasive procedures. Additionally, trainees will participate and present research (basic science and/or clinical research) projects with close collaboration with the St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre and Cardiac Sciences Manitoba.

Winnipeg, Manitoba is a cosmopolitan city with a small-town charm. It offers an exciting arts and culture scene and hosts numerous festivals such as Folklorama (Canada’s largest and longest multicultural festival), Festival du Voyageur (Western Canada’s largest winter festival), and Winnipeg Folk Festival. Dining experiences in Winnipeg are excellent, with an abundance in locally owned restaurants and breweries rated as top-notch across Western Canada. For sports enthusiasts, the city is home to the Winnipeg Jets and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The affordable cost of living and friendly atmosphere in Winnipeg makes it an ideal place to live in for young professionals and their families.
This residency program is for 3 years.
Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.
The Cardiology Training Program at the University of Manitoba is a Royal College accredited program with full approval.
The core training program in Cardiology at the University of Manitoba lasts for three years. Entry requires completion of at least three years of training in Internal Medicine in a RCPSC accredited program or equivalent.
Upon satisfactory completion of the training, trainees will be qualified to take the Cardiology Subspecialty examination of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The three year training program in Cardiology comprises nine compulsory rotations with four months of elective rotations. The compulsory rotations are:
One period of vacation is included in each year of the program which may be taken in two or four week blocks.
The program operates on a graded call schedule over the three years of training.
The applicants must indicate which publications are in peer reviewed versus non-peer reviewed journals/publications. If the applicant has submitted an article for publication at the time of CaRMS application, the applicant must provide evidence of journal notification of submission. The applicants must indicate all presentations at local resident research day as well as national and international conferences, and any prizes awarded. If a presentation (oral or abstract) has been submitted to a conference, the applicant should include any letter of acceptance by conference organizers.
A current curriculum vitae (CV) including all relevant information required for assessment of education, leadership, administrative and research experience is mandatory. Where applicable, please document whether activities are voluntary or reimbursed. Your CV should be downloaded to the document section. For research papers that have been submitted but not yet published, please include acknowledgement of submission from the journal. For the CaRMS Match which will take place in the Fall of 2022, all interviews will be conducted electronically. The applicant may meet electronically with a panel of interviewers, or with interviewers individually, or a combination of both.
