The University of British Columbia offers a comprehensive, 3-year, pediatric cardiology training program that is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The program accommodates 1-2 sub-specialty residents and 2-3 clinical fellows per year. There is capacity for selected subspecialty training in intervention and echocardiography; however, the focus of the program is core cardiology training. The program has an excellent track record: we have a very high success rate at exam completion, and our graduates work in academic pediatric cardiology programs all over the world.
British Columbia Children’s Hospital serves as the tertiary referral centre for the province, caring for pediatric cardiology patients from fetal life to early adulthood. The hospital provides all medical inpatient and outpatient care for cardiology patients, all diagnostic testing, cardiac surgery, including heart transplantation, and cardiac intervention. We also work closely with the PACH (Pacific Adult Congenital Heart) program, which is part of the Canadian Adult CHD network. Our medium-sized program ensures that trainees are exposed to the volume and complexity of cases required to be competent and confident with both common and complex presentations of pediatric heart disease. The program is designed to be stimulating with extensive hands-on experience, fostering independence. A rigorous academic curriculum has been established with support and participation of all members of the Division. The attending faculty have a long-standing tradition of teaching excellence, with a well-organized process of didactic and informal teaching, as well as abundant real-time feedback. There is an active research component; trainees continue to publish, and present their work nationally and internationally.
The Division seeks candidates who are hard-working and motivated, and work well as part of a team. We encourage the curious mind and the innovator to bring their questions and ideas with the goal of having them leave as medical experts who are thoughtful and passionate about their path and will continue to advance the field of pediatric cardiology.
This residency program is for 3 years.
Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.
UBC has adopted the Competence By Design Curriculum for Pediatric Cardiology. The framework for this curriculum is a 13 block rotation per year system, including experience in echocardiography, electrophysiology, cardiac catheterization, outpatient clinic, inpatient service, advanced cardiac imaging, cardiac ICU as well as elective and research time. Adult congenital heart disease and cardiac pathology experiences are provided longitudinally. The robust academic curriculum includes daily, interactive teaching sessions, monthly research rounds and quarterly journal club.
