Program Highlights

  • Diverse and challenging high volume/high acuity tertiary care rotations combined with rural broad spectrum FPA clinical environments. Goal of this blend is to be able to achieve the necessary clinical exposure and the demanding goals and objectives within the limited 12 month time frame while gaining clear insight into the specific demands of a rural FPA practice.
  • Dedicated and experienced anesthesia faculty committed to teaching
  • Shared educational and social opportunities with the UBC Royal College anesthesia program
  • Weekly full day rigorous Academic Day shared with Royal College anesthesia program and augmented by FPA specific seminar series
  • FPA seminar series focused on broad range of FPA specific topics including anesthetic considerations of co-existing disease, clinical challenges of rural environment with limited resources, oral exam preparation, and transition to practice.
  • Support to participate in national FPA Bootcamp and 2 annual UBC anesthesia conferences
  • The Whitehorse rotation in the Yukon Territory is very popular and highly valued as excellent clinical exposure to broad scope FPA practice.
  • Additional rural block in either Terrace or Campbell River
  • Multiple rural BC elective sites for additional time with FPA preceptors and further FP clinical exposure.

General Information

This residency program is for 1 year.

Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.

Rotations:
The rotations are divided into 4 week blocks and consist of:

  • Adult anesthesia: Combined total of 5 blocks between Vancouver Acute Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, Lions Gate Hospital, or Royal Columbian Hospital.
  • Pediatric & Obstetric anesthesia: 2 blocks each at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital
  • ICU: 1 block at Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster, BC
  • Community Rotation: 1 block in Whitehorse, Yukon, 1 block in additional rural location
  • Anesthesia Elective: 1 block
