Program Highlights

  • A broad range of training sites—including hospitals, patients’ homes, hospices, long-term care facilities, outpatient clinics, and community settings—ensures residents gain comprehensive, hands-on experience across the full continuum of palliative care. This diverse exposure enables residents to develop adaptability, clinical judgment, and communication skills tailored to varied care environments. It also deepens their understanding of system-level care coordination, interprofessional collaboration, and the social determinants of health that impact patients and families across settings.
  • The program emphasizes a comprehensive approach to palliative care that addresses both malignant and non-malignant disease trajectories. Residents are trained to recognize and manage the unique palliative needs of patients with advanced cancer as well as those with chronic progressive illnesses such as heart failure, COPD, end-stage renal disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and frailty. This broad clinical focus ensures that residents develop the diagnostic insight, symptom management expertise, and communication skills needed to deliver high-quality care across a wide spectrum of serious illnesses—regardless of diagnosis—while aligning care plans with patient goals, values, and prognostic considerations.
  • The program places a strong emphasis on providing compassionate, respectful care to patients and families from culturally diverse backgrounds. Residents are trained to recognize and address the cultural, spiritual, and linguistic factors that influence how individuals experience serious illness, make healthcare decisions, and express preferences around end-of-life care. Through structured teaching, reflective practice, and immersive clinical experiences, residents develop cultural humility and the skills needed to deliver equitable, person-centered care. This includes working effectively with interpreters, understanding health beliefs and practices across cultures, and fostering trust with patients and communities who may face systemic barriers to care.
  • Residents benefit from extensive opportunities to work with and learn from experienced interprofessional care teams, including physicians, nurses, social workers, spiritual care providers, pharmacists, occupational and physical therapists, and other allied health professionals. This collaborative environment reflects the team-based nature of palliative care and equips residents with the skills needed to communicate effectively, share decision-making responsibilities, and coordinate care across disciplines. By engaging in regular team rounds, family meetings, and interdisciplinary case discussions, residents gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse perspectives and expertise each team member brings to patient care. This fosters holistic, patient- and family-centered care and prepares residents to lead and contribute meaningfully to interprofessional teams in any clinical setting.
  • Unique training opportunity: Leadership, Education, Advocacy, Research, and Non-Clinical (LEARN) program allowing residents to supplement their learning experiences.

General Information

The TMU School of Medicine currently has clinical partnerships with multiple major training sites:

Residency training will leverage a distributed model, which may include training at any of these sites for learning in environments which include community and clinical settings, urban and rural environments, and inpatient and outpatient settings. While the majority of resident training will be focused in Peel and surrounding communities, additional learning experiences may take place at other training sites within Canada through Inter-University Affiliation Agreements. These agreements are subject to change and may result in training at sites other than those listed above.

Travel to various locations will be required. Access to a personal vehicle will be beneficial, though anyone with access to a reliable means of transportation is encouraged to consider this program.
