Program Highlights

Excellent Clinical Exposure to Rheumatic Diseases: The Kingston Health Sciences Centre Rheumatology clinics receive referrals from a very large area. Large numbers of patients with inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue diseases and vasculitides are seen and, there is exposure to the full breadth of Rheumatology.

Training in MSK Ultrasound: Dedicated ultrasound technique teaching for Rheumatology trainees is available. As well, anatomy and additional teaching is scheduled each academic year for trainees.

Support for Educational Activities: Funding is available for travel to conferences and courses. Textbooks and a membership to the American College of Rheumatology is provided.

Immunology Curriculum: A basic science curriculum relevant to Rheumatology is provided for trainees.

Research Opportunities: Division members are active in a number of research areas. Excellent research mentorship is offered to trainees in the areas of basic sciences, clinical epidemiology, and medical education.

Opportunities in Medical Education: Trainees in the Rheumatology program will have a variety of opportunities to develop and practice teaching skills, by teaching both residents and medical students.

Excellent Faculty and Mentorship: The Rheumatology Division at Queen’s University is known for dedicated faculty who enjoy teaching and providing mentorship, including career guidance, to postgraduate trainees.

Collegial Environment: The environment at Queen’s University and Kingston Health Sciences Centre is collegial and supportive. Traditionally, there has been a very friendly community of subspecialty residents, and close connections with the Core Internal Medicine training residents. There is excellent support from the Program Director, Division Chair and dedicated Program Assistant.

General Information

This residency program is for 2 years.

Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.

The Curriculum for Postgraduate Trainees in Rheumatology will include the following:
  • Ambulatory Clinics in Rheumatology including a longitudinal Residents Clinic with the opportunity to quickly develop skills needed for independent practice
  • In-patient Consultation Service with the Rheumatology subspecialty resident involved in all consults and collaboration with other services.
  • Mandatory rotations in Pediatric Rheumatology, Community Rheumatology, and a two-week rotation with MSK
  • Radiology
  • Electives in Research, Orthopedics, Dermatology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (including EMG), Specialized Rheumatology clinics, and The Arthritis Society.
  • Weekly academic program designed for Rheumatology trainees in accordance with objectives of training as designated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.
  • Weekly rounds for Rheumatology open to all students and faculty in the Department of Medicine
  • Curriculum that includes basic science, critical appraisal and review of the CanMEDS roles
  • Regular feedback, evaluation and support for professional development
  • Practice examinations, including written and oral formats
  • Pediatric Rheumatology rotation at the University of Ottawa, Toronto, McMaster, or other sites as per request and availability

As per the Rheumatology training program curriculum, the training is 2 years in length, progressing through the following stages of Competency-Based Medical Education:

  • Transition to Discipline
  • Foundations of Discipline
  • Core of Discipline
  • Transition to Practice

Prep Time
  1. Subject to operational requirements and at the request of a resident, a resident will not be scheduled for call duties for a period up to fourteen days prior to a CFPC or RCPSC certification exam.
  2. Subject to operational requirements and at the request of a resident, a resident *will be granted up to seven consecutive days off during one of the four week*s preceding a CFPC or RCPSC certification exam.
