Program Highlights

We offer consultative services for a full range of neurological disorders in children. The highlight of our program is its people, with a large and diverse faculty group whose interests and expertise span all subspecialties in neurology. Our faculty are engaged with our residents and are passionate in providing teaching and mentorship (both clinical and research). We have a close-knit resident group who are supportive of each other and welcoming to new team members. We also have close and collegial relationships with the Adult Neurology and General Pediatrics Programs, who contribute to our residents’ learning.

We offer a Longitudinal Resident Clinic starting in second year, where residents are able to foster their own independence and are encouraged to follow in-patients.

The best part of our program is the close relationship between our faculty members and residents, plus a yearly barbecue and Christmas party. Everyone is approachable.

The Stollery Children’s Hospital is a well-recognized centre for specialized pediatric services. It is Western Canada’s referral centre for pediatric cardiac surgery and a national leader in organ transplantation. The Stollery cares for children from northern and central Alberta, as well as parts of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut.

University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) is located on the U of A campus. It is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually from across Western and Northern Canada.

General Information

The University of Alberta offers exceptional training experiences. Our inpatient service is the busiest pediatric subspecialty consult service and is divided into a general neurology service that covers the inpatient ward and emergency room, as well as a neurocritical care service that covers the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. There are two faculty members on during the day to supervise residents.

We have a diverse array of outpatient clinics including:

  • General pediatric neurology
  • Rapid access clinic
  • Epilepsy (including epilepsy surgery and ketogenic diet)
  • Headache
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Autonomic disorders
  • Neonatal neurology
  • Neurogenetics/neurodevelopment
  • Neurocutaneous disorders
  • Neuroinflammatory disorders
  • Movement disorders
  • Stroke

Training is available in neurophysiology, including EEG and EMG, with exposure to pediatric neurorehabilitation and multidisciplinary clinics at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.

Our program fosters resident interest in research and supports residents to pursue research to the degree that aligns with their interest and career goals. We have a strong academic faculty group with research supervision and mentorship available for residents in both clinical and basic science research.

Weekly pediatric neuroscience rounds, epilepsy surgery rounds and many teaching sessions are part of daily rounds, which assist in sharing and consolidating valuable knowledge.

We are hosting a virtual CaRMS information session on Wednesday, November 5th, 2025 from 4:30pm-5:30pm MST.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pediatric neurology is always interesting and challenging. It is a privilege to be able to support children and families with neurological disorders through circumstances that can be very difficult. There have been great advances in our understanding of the brain and brain function, with increasing opportunities for treatment (for example, epilepsy, migraine and neuromuscular disorders).

We place special emphasis on clinical research as well as opportunities in basic research. Our program has strong collegial relationships with both the adult neurology program and general pediatrics, and we offer interdisciplinary neuroscience rounds. We provide excellent teaching in neuroscience and neuroanatomy in the academic half-day.

Within Pediatric Neurology there are many ways in which physicians can further individualize their career based on their interests. This includes numerous clinical subspecialties, neurophysiology training, leadership opportunities, health advocacy, research (clinical or basic science), and education. Most pediatric neurologists in Canada have an academic position (i.e. associated with a university), so they have multiple and varying responsibilities including in-patient and ambulatory care, teaching, research and administrative duties.

Most practice in a group with shared call responsibilities. Call is often from home (i.e. you do not need to be in hospital overnight.)

An increasing number of graduates are choosing to practice neurology in the community (i.e. private practice), with an emphasis on clinical care and greater flexibility in building their private practice.

Edmonton has all the amenities of a large city along with a strong sense of community.

Edmonton hosts a year-round slate of festivals, reflected in its nickname Festival City. The city also has a great food scene with outstanding restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops, many of which are within walking distance from the Stollery. And, of course, there’s also the West Edmonton Mall, the largest mall in North America.

The City of Edmonton and its surrounding areas offers a great community to live in during residency. There are many safe and affordable areas of the city to live in, including many options for families. Edmonton’s river valley is the largest urban park in Canada and is conveniently accessed from the university or many of the communities nearby. There are many options for easy weekend escapes from the city including lakes and camping nearby or Jasper National Park being only a few hours away.

Edmonton is a hockey city and proudly so. Whether you go to an NHL game at Rogers Place to watch Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl or sit at a local pub, Oilers fans are among the loudest in the league.

The university is located in the vibrant Garneau neighbourhood with cafés and restaurants, next to the river valley with its many trails and parks.

Yes, we do. Our next scheduled virtual CaRMS information session is on Wednesday, November 5th, 2025 from 4:30pm-5:30pm MST.
