Camrose is the most recent addition to the rural family medicine training stream within the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta. This stream has integrated ideal aspects of pre-existing rural programs and created a longitudinal based rural program. We strongly believe that future rural physicians should train in the setting in which they will practice. The training program is rigorous and comprehensive with acute care exposure to challenge and build confident and competent family medicine practitioners. There is also a strong emphasis on resident wellness and student support. More information can be found on our website: https://www.ualberta.ca/en/family-medicine/postgraduate/prospective-residents/rural-stream/camrose.html

PGY1 Overview:
The Camrose program is longitudinally based with regular ED shifts and obstetrical call whenever onsite in Camrose, as well as hospitalist and inpatient care over both years of the program. The first year will include 5 months of Family Medicine with a psychiatry/chronic pain/psychiatry focus and a 5 month rotation of Family Medicine that has a womens health/pediatric focus. Preceptor based learning ensures excellent access to clinical cases and individual teaching which is usually one-on-one. Because clinical services are not dependent on the presence of house staff, on-call is often from home and learning experiences are focused on education more than service.
There are also off-site rotations including ICU/CCU, Orthopedics and Addictions which will occur in Red Deer. There is an additional 5 weeks of elective time that residents can use to tailor their learning to their individual needs & interests..
PGY2 Overview:
In second year, Residents continue to gain longitudinal exposure to obstetrics, ED shifts and inpatient care, in addition to their integrated Family Medicine blocks. There will be 5 months of Family Medicine with a Geriatrics/Palliative/Internal Medicine focus with additional specialty clinics, as well as 5 months of Family Medicine with a focus on Radiology and additional ED exposure. Residents will have the opportunity to go to Edmonton for 4 weeks of Pediatrics ED and complete 4 more weeks of electives to round out their training experience. There will be an additional 8 weeks of rural Family Medicine outside of Camrose. The main thrust of PGY2 is to develop the resident as a rural family physician, building on the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired in the first year.
Home to the University of Alberta Augustana campus, Camrose is a vibrant and growing community of approximately 20, 000 people located under an hour southeast of Edmonton. With over 20 clinic-based family physicians based out of two family medicine clinics, residents spend ample time with preceptors to experience various practice styles, panel compositions, and special interests. There are many options for rural family medicine rotations, which are generally in medium-sized rural communities with busy emergency rooms and active surgical and obstetrical programs. Camrose’s St. Mary’s Hospital has a broad complement of specialists providing care to the surrounding populace of neighbouring communities, totalling around 150,000 people. It is a regional stroke center with a special care unit and skilled hospitalist team.

Although most of the application is the same, there is a specific rural question to be answered if you are applying to the rural sites.
Yes! If offered an interview you can add Yellowknife, Red Deer and/ or Grande Prairie prior to ranking, however interviews are separate for urban and rural and you would not be able to add Edmonton.
Although this is the first year that Camrose is a rural stream offered through UofA Family Medicine, it has been a longitudinal learning site within our Red Deer stream the past few years. This was such a popular rotation and was the perfect community to develop into its own stream. The site co-directors are previous graduates of the program who are passionate about creating a phenomenal training experience.
By having fewer other learners in the hospital and usually being the primary learner on a service, you get to work one on one with the staff. The staff usually tailors your experience to ensure that your personal learning objectives are met and allows you to do all the procedures. You are not standing behind any other learners when interesting cases come in. As a result, you will be more ready for independent practice when the time comes.
Camrose does not have a vacation block which is great! We get to spread our 20 vacation and 4 flex days over the entire year instead of having all our time off in one month. There is quite a bit of flexibility for scheduling your time off as long as proper notice is given to the program admin. We also get conference, study, exam and education days.
