Program Highlights

Mount Forest offers a charming small-town atmosphere with a strong sense of community, perfect for those seeking a peaceful lifestyle. Surrounded by picturesque landscapes, it provides easy access to outdoor activities while still being conveniently located near larger urban centers.

Mount Forest is McMaster program’s most “rural” teaching site! As the only residents in the community, every learning opportunity goes directly to our rural family medicine residents, with preceptors who are keen to allow you to embrace every procedural/learning opportunity. Located on the beautiful Saugeen River and just south of the Bruce Peninsula, Mount Forest is a small town of 5,000 people. The hospital and clinic serve not only the residents of Mount Forest and its surrounding area but also the nearby Mennonite community. This rural program is designed to prepare residents for a fulfilling career as rural family physicians, equipped with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in various medical contexts.

Residents are expected to live in Mount Forest during their program as their Primary Preceptor and family medicine homebase practice will be in Mount Forest.  Off-service rotations are scheduled in nearby MacCARE and ROMP communities, necessitating some travel. Residents attend weekly academic sessions at the hub in Guelph.

In Mount Forest, there are seven family physicians who are incredibly supportive of one another and their medical learners. You have one Primary Preceptor, but there are six others willing to pull you into a room to perform a procedure or observe a unique finding! All preceptors in Mount Forest are excellent and continuously make learning a priority.
