  • Residents will successfully achieve all CanMEDS roles, demonstrating the knowledge and skills to provide optimal care to patients and families in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Residents will excel in teamwork due to strong communication skills and a collegial approach, and have multiple opportunities to engage in leadership roles to affect positive change.
  • Residents will receive the training, supervision, and support to successfully participate in scholarly activity.
  • Residents will regularly engage in self-reflection in pursuit of continuous professional and personal development.

The program will support work/life balance, encouraging residents to stay well and pay attention to personal interests and relationships. And finally, the program truly wants residents to enjoy and (dare we say it) have fun during residency!

Halifax cityscape from water
Halifax
Halifax, an Atlantic Ocean port in eastern Canada, is the provincial capital of Nova Scotia. A major business centre, it’s also known for its maritime history. The city’s dominated by the hilltop Citadel, a star-shaped fort completed in the 1850s. Waterfront warehouses known as the Historic Properties recall Halifax’s days as a trading hub for privateers, notably during the War of 1812.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Dalhousie Psychiatry Residency Training Program accepts 9 new residents each year.

Dalhousie University has a distributed education model. There are several sites across the Maritimes, including Halifax Regional Municipality and Saint John, New Brunswick. During PGY-1, residents spend two months outside of Halifax. To develop both clinical and educational continuity, the amount of moving will be kept to a minimum. There is accommodation and travel allowances through the university and Nova Scotia Health.

We work hard to support residents who have families. Many of our residents arrive with families or build families during residency training.
