This academic and community-based program is built on the principles of population health, all levels of disease prevention, health promotion and protection. It prepares physicians to function flexibly and effectively in leadership roles in a wide variety of community health and academic/research settings.
Our challenging and exciting training path integrates the three major components of the program — Public Health field rotations, clinical training in Family Medicine, and academic coursework — throughout the five years.
The McMaster Public Health & Preventive Medicine program has training partnerships with public health services in Hamilton, Waterloo, Niagara, Halton Region, Southwest Public Health, and Grand Erie as well as with Public Health Ontario. Placements in these organizations offer a wide variety of experiences at different levels of government and in different sized communities, all with unique population health issues.
Residents are strongly encouraged to complete Family Medicine training. Residents completing Family Medicine match to Hamilton-based Family Medicine training sites. In addition, all residents are required to complete twelve months of graduate studies in epidemiology and related areas relevant to public health practice. Many residents opt to complete a Masters of Public Health (MPH) at McMaster or other universities offering similar programs. Residents who have previously completed relevant graduate studies may apply for advanced standing or pursue additional graduate training. Tuition for graduate studies is the responsibility of residents enrolled in those programs.
