Program Highlights

This academic and community-based program is built on the principles of population health, all levels of disease prevention, health promotion and protection. It prepares physicians to function flexibly and effectively in leadership roles in a wide variety of community health and academic/research settings.

Our challenging and exciting training path integrates the three major components of the program — Public Health field rotations, clinical training in Family Medicine, and academic coursework — throughout the five years.

General Information

The McMaster Public Health & Preventive Medicine program has forged training partnerships with public health services in Hamilton, Waterloo, and Niagara, as well as with Public Health Ontario. Residents also have the opportunity to complete rotations in governmental health agencies and other organizations in the province. These placements offer a wide variety of experiences at different levels of government and in different sized communities, all with unique population health issues. Our residents have followed varied and challenging paths to reach their career objectives.

Residents will also be matched to one of three Hamilton-based Family Medicine training sites as well as apply to a graduate program relevant to PHPM, such as the Master of Public Health or Health Research Methodology program at McMaster, and must meet the requirements of the program.

Hamilton cityscape
Hamilton
Hamilton is a Canadian port city on the western tip of Lake Ontario. The Niagara Escarpment, a huge, forested ridge known locally as “the mountain” and dotted with conservation areas and waterfalls, divides the city. The long-distance Bruce Trail runs along the escarpment. HMCS Haida, a naval warship on the city’s lakefront, and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in the south, trace Canada’s military past.

Resident Experience

Mark A. Cachia
PGY-2
In your opinion, what are the highlights of your program?
That you always feel part of the Mac PHPM community. Whether it’s attending half-days as a PGY-1, to seeing other residents during our planned socials, to impromptu board games nights, there’s always folks around!
I really appreciated the opportunity to choose whether or not to pursue the family medicine component of PHPM training at Mac. It allows me to focus on maximizing my learning during residency and helps me be the best physician I can be.
Our within-program community is supportive and always willing to help out a resident in need, especially our Program Coordinator! It can be a bit tricky coordinating everyone’s busy schedules (especially given COVID!) but the PHPM group is only a message away.
Outside of being a resident I’m involved in some environmental initiatives as well as trying to explore more of what Hamilton has to offer as the city begins to open up.
Our program has a dedicated wellness half-day in addition to resident initiated social activities such as hiking or going out for a bite to eat. There are also opportunities to be involved in helping shape the program direction and advocating for changes to continue to create a supportive resident experience.
I’m really looking forward to beginning my core public health rotations in the next year as I will be finally able to put all the theory I have learned into practice!
