The Geriatric Psychiatry Subspecialty Residency Program at the University of Manitoba was initially accredited by the Royal College in 2018 and received full accreditation status in 2021 by the Royal College. The 24-month program consists of well-supervised core experiences in outpatient, inpatient, consult liaison, and outreach rotations with increasing responsibilities and autonomy over the training. In addition, there are a wide array of teaching opportunities to colleagues, junior residents, and medical students. Elective time is available for learners to pursue areas of Geriatric Psychiatry that interest them most. Mandatory non-psychiatric rotations include Geriatric Medicine and Movement Disorders. Learners will also have dedicated time and mentorship focused on completing a scholarly project. In addition, there are weekly protected half days comprised of journal clubs, seminars, and self-study time. Resident wellness activities also occur during the year. The program makes every attempt to tailor the training experience to the learner’s specific career plans. Annual conference funding is available to residents in the program.
