Program Highlights

The Thoracic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Manitoba is a fully accredited (2022), two-year Royal College subspecialty residency program.

Thoracic Surgery for all of Manitoba is centralized to the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. There are currently five full time Thoracic Surgeons who provide the full range of general thoracic surgery procedures, including surgery for lung, esophageal, gastric, tracheal, chest wall, and mediastinal cancers as well as specializing in minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant diseases of the chest and upper gastrointestinal tract. We are also excited to offer residents robotic experience in our evolving thoracic surgical robotics program.

There is an active interventional thoracic endoscopy program concentrating on diagnostic and therapeutic techniques delivered endoscopically. The Wilf Taillieu Thoracic Endoscopy Unit and Clinic is a unique facility at the Health Sciences Centre in It consists of 6 clinic rooms, 3 procedure rooms (one of which has general anesthetic capability), and a recovery room.

This unit allows residents to participate in both a large volume of standard thoracic surgical outpatient procedures and more specialized procedures being performed at our center (excisional biopsies, ultrasound guided biopsies of lymph nodes, chest wall lesions, and lung masses, gastroscopy, bronchoscopy, dilatation, endoscopic injections, stent insertion, EMR, Convex and radial probe EBUS, endoscopic ultrasound, navigational bronchoscopy for biopsy and beacon placement, ESD, POEM, Z-POEM, POP).
