The Halton site offers the opportunity to learn comprehensive family medicine in a suburban setting with preceptors who work in diverse settings that may include office-based and hospital care. Each resident is in a close one-to-one relationship with a primary preceptor over the two years of residency.
Our preceptors are located either in the Halton McMaster Family Health Centre or within community teaching practices in Burlington, Waterdown, Milton, or Oakville. Many of our practices are within Family Health Teams, and all of our residents have the opportunity to work with hospital-based teams during their residency at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington or Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital in Oakville.
A key feature of our site is the focus on comprehensive family medicine in differing settings, like inpatient care, emergency shifts, coroner work, long term care, obstetrics and surgical assist, which help train residents to be a resource to their future communities. All of our preceptors provide comprehensive, community based care, which allows for an interesting mix of hospitalist and office-based medicine within the core family medicine experience.
Residents attend academic sessions locally, at the Halton McMaster Family Health Centre location in Burlington.
Each teaching practice cares for approximately 1,500 to 2,000 patients.
Clinical preceptor special interests include obstetrics, women’s health, mental health, chronic disease management, palliative care, long-term care, procedural skills, medical leadership, medical education and quality improvement
