About our Program

We are looking for the same thing as every program: human dynamos with a passion for the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology!

Regina is located on Treaty 4 territory and funds two residency spots in OBGYN each year. We work mainly out of the Regina General Hospital (RGH), a tertiary center that hosts our perinatal unit for southern Saskatchewan. RGH also is home to our Women’s Health Center where we have outpatient hysteroscopy and colposcopy clinics. It also supports our Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic where we see women by referral who are early in their pregnancy with problems such as pain, bleeding or have been diagnosed with a pregnancy loss. We also spend time at the Pasqua Hospital where the Allan Blair Cancer Centre is located for our gyne-oncology subspecialty rotations. Residents can expect to find a large volume of a wide range of pathology. Our program is primarily in an urban setting with frequent forays into some smaller communities, notably the highly popular Prince Albert rotation. These rotations have been very well received.

A comprehensive framework of structured and protected academic time, including weekly subspecialty morning rounds, academic half day, biannual OSCE’s, and monthly Grand Rounds are in place. Attending staff host Journal Club in their homes monthly from September to June – you can always expect excellent food and discussion about interesting articles presented by our residents. We have a modern and well-equipped simulation lab in Regina that is available to our residents 24/7 to practice their technical skills outside of the OR. We run approximately 4 high-fidelity SIM sessions a year, and our session leaders have extra training and a special interest in simulation.

At the University of Saskatchewan, resident input into our program is crucial to running our program successfully. We are a large ‘small’ program making communication relatively easy.  Dr. Jackie Ferguson, an alumnus of our program, is the current assistant program director for the Regina OBGYN site. Residents are well represented in the running of our program. We always look forward to our Annual Retreat where we discuss how to make our program better every year in the setting of a beautiful Saskatchewan location away from the city.

MIS is especially advanced in Saskatchewan with access to advanced state-of-the-art technology. Global ablation, hysteroscopic morcellation, TLH, and transcervical tubal occlusion are routinely performed by residents daily (to name a few). Residents receive early exposure and training in all procedural skills.

A full complement of elective and selective time is available throughout the 5 years. Residents either spend concentrated times with local sub-specialists or generalist mentors, leave for out-of-province experiences and, in the past, out-of-country experiences.

We are very proud of our residents, staff, and program. The strength of our program is the one-on-one training our residents receive from our attending physicians. This leads to the early development of enhanced skills in the MIS, Urogynecology, Obstetrics, and Oncology rotations. We value and encourage early hands-on experience and consistently receive feedback regarding our Residents’ technical and surgical skills.

About our City

The “Queen City” is now home to over 260,000 people. Regina is a shining city rising from a flat prairie landscape, less than an hour from the stunning Qu’Appelle Valley which is studded with sparkling lakes. Wascana Centre is the heart of Regina – a beautifully landscaped park surrounding a 120-hectare lake. The park is home to 8.7 km of paved pathways and 5.6 km of natural paths, recreation, and play area. Wascana Centre also contains the Provincial Legislative Building, both campuses of the University of Regina and First Nations University of Canada, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Saskatchewan Science Centre, the MacKenzie Art Gallery, and the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts.

Many annual festivals and events are held throughout the year, including the Mosaic Multicultural Festival, Cathedral Village Arts Festival, Regina Folk Festival, JazzFest, Queen City Pride, Candian Western Agribition, and Country Thunder. Our coffee scene is thriving along with many other small businesses in the quaint Cathedral area. You can also check out the Globe Theatre for fantastic musicals and plays, as well as the Conexus Arts Centre for a wide variety of productions and performances from the Regina Symphony Orchestra. If you’re into outdoor activities, you can look to both Regina, as well as nearby parks and lakes (e.g. Wascana Trails, White Butte, Echo Valley, Buffalo Pound) which offer great views year-round.

Saskatchewan has a diverse geography and a bustling economy. Our urban centers are growing and have a lot to offer (jobs, housing, entertainment, restaurants, and services). Young families are moving here and having babies, so there is no shortage of obstetrical experience! You don’t have to be a Rider fan when you get here, but you will be one when you leave!
