Faits saillants

Our strengths include tremendous clinical diversity, rural and northern locations, Indigenous health, international health opportunities and health advocacy. Our program boasts outstanding exam preparation, excellent personal and academic mentorship and award-winning educators.

Our department collaborates with the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) and is the home of world-renowned researchers. We support resident research and encourage scholarly projects.

We provide services and education in all pediatric subspecialties, with exposure to unique programs. The Stollery Children’s Hospital is the Western Canada referral centre for all pediatric liver and small bowel transplants and all pediatric cardiac surgeries, including cardiac transplants. Our two intensive care units (medical/surgical and cardiac) and pediatric emergency see a wide variety of pediatric diagnoses. We have the largest geographic catchment area in North America.

Our residents are able to work with underserved populations through outreach clinics, Yellowknife rotations and a strong social pediatric program.

Our residents have gone on to meaningful careers across North America, both in the community and as academic faculty in general pediatrics and subspecialties. We love to hear of their ongoing successes.

Renseignements généraux

As the capital of Alberta, Edmonton is a cultural, governmental and educational centre. It is the northernmost major North American city, with a population of more than one million and its North Saskatchewan River valley is the largest stretch of urban parkland in North America.

The city hosts a year-round slate of more than 30 festivals, reflected in its nickname Festival City. The Edmonton Folk Music Festival has been running since 1980 and attracts talented artists such as Bahamas, Hozier and Leon Bridges.

The city’s medical community is made up of a vibrant, unique and diverse population. The people are the strength of our community, both medical and beyond.

The culinary scene is exciting and ever-changing, with new and different options and flavours from around the world.

Edmonton is well-situated for weekend getaways to the Rocky Mountains in Jasper, Banff or Canmore. Our residents regularly make time to go hiking and camping.

Expérience des résidents

A resident
PGY-1
Excellent exposure to bread and butter of pediatrics but also to the more rare and complex conditions seen at an academic center. Very supportive program directors and admin, as well as preceptors. Resident wellness is heavily integrated and focused on in the program which makes for healthier residents overall. The staff have been very welcoming and take active roles in teaching.
