Program Highlights

Our strengths include tremendous clinical diversity, rural and northern locations, Indigenous health, international health opportunities and health advocacy. Our program boasts outstanding exam preparation, excellent personal and academic mentorship and award-winning educators.

Our department collaborates with the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) and is the home of world-renowned researchers. We support resident research and encourage scholarly projects.

We provide services and education in all pediatric subspecialties, with exposure to unique programs. The Stollery Children’s Hospital is the Western Canada referral centre for all pediatric liver and small bowel transplants and all pediatric cardiac surgeries, including cardiac transplants. Our two intensive care units (medical/surgical and cardiac) and pediatric emergency see a wide variety of pediatric diagnoses. We have the largest geographic catchment area in North America.

Our residents are able to work with underserved populations through outreach clinics, Yellowknife rotations and a strong social pediatric program.

Our residents have gone on to meaningful careers across North America, both in the community and as academic faculty in general pediatrics and subspecialties. We love to hear of their ongoing successes.

General Information

As the capital of Alberta, Edmonton is a cultural, governmental and educational centre. It is the northernmost major North American city, with a population of more than one million and its North Saskatchewan River valley is the largest stretch of urban parkland in North America.

The city hosts a year-round slate of more than 30 festivals, reflected in its nickname Festival City. The Edmonton Folk Music Festival has been running since 1980 and attracts talented artists such as Bahamas, Hozier and Leon Bridges.

The city’s medical community is made up of a vibrant, unique and diverse population. The people are the strength of our community, both medical and beyond.

The culinary scene is exciting and ever-changing, with new and different options and flavours from around the world.

Edmonton is well-situated for weekend getaways to the Rocky Mountains in Jasper, Banff or Canmore. Our residents regularly make time to go hiking and camping.

Resident Experience

A resident
PGY-1
In your opinion, what are the highlights of your program?
Excellent exposure to bread and butter of pediatrics but also to the more rare and complex conditions seen at an academic center. Very supportive program directors and admin, as well as preceptors. Resident wellness is heavily integrated and focused on in the program which makes for healthier residents overall. The staff have been very welcoming and take active roles in teaching.
Resident wellness , collegiality, emphasis on learning and graduated responsibility.
Closely knit and supportive. We have been fortunate to get together and actually meet one another in safe settings, and we all look out for another as residents. Staff are invested in their learners and very respectful of other obligations such as ahd’s, call, etc.
Plenty of activities to do in Edmonton especially outside either locally in the River Valley or at nearby national parks. There also plenty of festivals and events to attend, and excellent cuisine especially Viatnemese, Korean, and ice cream!
The night float system is incredible and allows you to commit yourself to rotations without having to take as many post-call days. We also have regularly scheduled wellness days and multiple events organized between years to facilitate connectedness.
Becoming a more competent resident and improving my knowledge of pediatrics, in addition to building strong connections with my colleagues and caring for my patients and their families.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our night float is a hybrid system, designed to minimize time away from other rotations while optimizing resident wellbeing and mitigating the risk of fatigue. A week on night float would consist of four night shifts running from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. All other shifts are split shifts with no 24-hour in-house weekend call for general pediatrics.

On average, it’s a 50/50 split.

We do outreach in the following places:

  • Yellowknife
  • Red Deer
  • Clinics in Slave Lake, Cold Lake, High Level, Saddle Lake
  • Maskwacis
  • Grande Prairie

We have flexible elective opportunities for those interested in rural/regional training.

Our people. We have so many faculty members and support staff who are dedicated to providing residents with the best, most diverse pediatric education possible.

Implementation of the Royal College’s Competence by Design initiative is a new curricular change that we are navigating through and embracing.

We would also welcome more opportunities for longitudinal NICU experience as our general pediatric call coverage does not include labour and delivery.
