Faits saillants

The Queen’s University NOSM Stream PM&R program is a new, unique and collaborative effort to take advantage of the best training across Northern and Eastern Ontario. Training locations include tertiary care hospital and community experiences in Thunder Bay and Kingston. We will have one position in Thunder Bay. Residents will complete part of their training in Kingston to take advantage of the strengths and diversity of our faculty and patients across our province.

We have integrated support for research with access to research scientists at both universities. Both centres have established services in the core rehabilitation areas of stroke, spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury, musculoskeletal, and amputation medicine.

Our program is distributed between Northern Ontario and Kingston, which offers the best of flexibility, personalized attention, and practical experience. The rehabilitation centre in Thunder Bay serves a provincial population of over 250,000.

The program is based out of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) and St. Joseph’s Hospital. These two sites cover all core rehabilitation services, including inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, electrodiagnostics, and prosthetics and orthotics, among other standard rehabilitation services. There are opportunities for pulmonary rehabilitation and cardiac rehabilitation training in Thunder Bay and in Kingston.

The campus in Kingston is based out of Providence Care Hospital, which includes a very collegial group of faculty and residents working in the newest rehabilitation hospital in Canada, located on Lake Ontario. Kingston off-service rotations take place at Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital.

While working in Thunder Bay, you will experience:

  • Hospital-based PM&R block experiences, which will include both junior and senior rotations on a general rehabilitation unit.
  • Longitudinal PM&R experiences in general outpatient physiatry, including electrodiagnostics.
  • Working and learning with interdisciplinary rehab teams in both clinical inpatient/outpatient settings.
  • Opportunities for elective/selective rotations in rural settings.

The Queen’s NOSM Stream PM&R program offers junior rehabilitation rotations in the Foundations of Discipline stage, and longer senior rehabilitation rotations in the Core of Discipline stage. Although not required by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, this spiral curriculum allows graduated progression of responsibilities, as well as spaced repetition to consolidate rehabilitation knowledge.

The program includes a particular focus on EMG training, with sufficient exposure to meet the training requirement for the CSCN EMG examination on completion of the program.

Longitudinal academic coaching is provided to all residents throughout residency training. Funding is available to attend relevant national and international conferences.

When in Kingston, residents will have first on call responsibilities Monday through Thursday each week, with the exception of statutory holidays. Hospitalist physicians are first on call on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and on statutory holidays.

When in Thunder Bay, residents may have on call responsibilities depending on service requirements.
