Welcome to the McMaster University Pediatric Residency Program! The program is committed to providing exceptional, flexible training in clinical pediatrics, advocacy, scholarly work and education. Residents benefit from our faculty’s collegial approach and broad expertise, enabling trainees to thrive as they prepare for a career in pediatric medicine or its subspecialties. The Pediatric Residency Program accepts 10-12 residents per year from various entry streams.

Along with all pediatric residency programs in Canada, our program transitioned to Competency Based Medical Education in July 2021. This curriculum ensures that all residents completing the program receive an excellent foundation in pediatrics that will prepare them for any career they may eventually choose. The structure of the 4-year program is designed to facilitate graduated responsibility and flexibility in training. Our program allows for ample elective and selective time, allowing residents to address individual learning objectives and prepare themselves for their selected career choices. All residents have elective time in Core and Transition to Practice stages (2nd to 4th year). Residents may participate in global health experiences during these electives, with global health training opportunities and mentorship within the department and the university for all residents. There is also significant flexibility through Integrated Pediatrics (IP) blocks, allowing residents to return to clinical areas for more experience and to explore unique supplementary clinical opportunities.

We feel it is essential for residents to be exposed to general consulting pediatric practice in the community setting, thus there are mandatory community rotations in the program. Hamilton has many smaller communities within an hour of the city (including Brampton, Niagara, Kitchener- Waterloo and Brantford), with strong educational links to these communities allowing for valuable learning experiences.

Hamilton

Hamilton is a Canadian port city on the western tip of Lake Ontario. The Niagara Escarpment, a huge, forested ridge known locally as “the mountain” and dotted with conservation areas and waterfalls, divides the city. The long-distance Bruce Trail runs along the escarpment. HMCS Haida, a naval warship on the city’s lakefront, and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in the south, trace Canada’s military past.

a. The people – co-residents, staff, program administrative staff and program leadership – very approachable and understanding team that truly works with us to facilitate our success b. Program size – robust program with diversity of experiences, but cohesive enough to have access to research and mentorship opportunities, create niche areas of interest and academic exploration c. Call model – night float model allows residents to not miss significant learning experiences on subspecialty rotations; dedicated float weeks promotes resident wellness overall instead of managing a call burden throughout each rotation of the year; built-in transition to senior resident curriculum that helps prepare junior learners for the added roles and responsibilities d. Responsiveness to resident feedback – several channels for residents to be involved in directing the future direction of the program, including resident council, chief resident role, education resource persons for each rotation, etc. e. Diversity and inclusion committee work – in response to resident feedback and need identified, committee started with branches in community advocacy, collaboration and education to help promote inclusivity principles within McMaster Pediatrics

Dedicated wellness representatives who facilitate different wellness initiatives throughout the year, including yoga, meditation, hikes; also are available to connect residents with wellness supports outside of the MacPeds community, within McMaster or the Hamilton area b. Resident affairs staff and counselors available for flexible drop-in scheduling appointments throughout the week c. Monthly treats and talks sessions built into protected academic half day time where residents can discuss challenges within residency and/or life with co-residents; facilitated discussion by a counselor through Resident Affairs d. Resident Support Network – confidential network of peer supports as well as faculty that have volunteered to be contacted by any resident in crisis at any time; receive training in facilitating and debriefing difficult conversations and are well-versed in various resident support channels to direct residents in need to e. Ability to opt-out of 1 academic half day per quarter to use that time for personal and/or wellness purposes
