Faits saillants

The program provides full training in Pediatric Infectious Diseases as outlined in the Objectives of Training and Specialty Training Requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Experience is offered in all aspects of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases as afforded by BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH), the only quaternary pediatric hospital in BC. This includes the management of common serious infections of childhood and unusual infections in special populations (including immunocompromised patients, HIV-infected children, and recent immigrants).

Highlights of our program include:

  • Daily multi-disciplinary meetings with infection control, microbiology, and antimicrobial stewardship teams as part of the inpatient consult service
  • Weekly antimicrobial stewardship “handshake” rounds with various services within the hospital, providing both a collegial and educational opportunity in active patient care
  • A 3-month UBC-based course in Microbiology, Virology, Parasitology, Epidemiology and Infection Control to provide a strong foundational knowledge base
  • Experiences in our multi-disciplinary HIV clinic, family immunization clinic, obstetric infectious diseases clinic, and multi-organ transplant clinic
  • Robust research opportunities in basic science, clinical, and global health research
  • Partnerships with international sites for clinical electives and experience in global health, including Kenya, Thailand, and Australia

Our trainees are encouraged to be involved in teaching activities at all levels of the hospital and within the medical education system.
