BC Children’s Hospital is located in beautiful Vancouver. The Hospital is the sole tertiary care centre for Pediatric Gastroenterology in the Province of British Columbia and serves a Pediatric population of approximately 1 million children aged 0 –18 years. Our clinical unit’s staff includes 10 Gastroenterologists, 2 basic science researchers, clinical trainees of various levels of training from medical students to fellows, 4 clinical nurses, several dietitians, and support clerical and administrative staff.

The BCCH ambulatory care program sees nearly 1200 new referrals and 1900 follow-up patients in the clinic per year, plus 370 medical day unit and 50 ER assessments. We follow approximately 500 children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease with approximately 100 new patients diagnosed with IBD every year. The clinic also follows large numbers of patients with celiac disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, liver disease and other chronic GI disorders, as well as patients both pre- and post-liver transplant. There are specialty clinics for multi-organ transplant, celiac disease, hepatology, complex feeding/nutrition, eosinophilic esophagitis, and IBD, as well as general GI clinics.

We accept 1-2 trainees per year.

This residency program is for 2 years.

Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.

 

BC Children’s Hospital is offering a 2-year fully accredited clinical subspecialty resident training program in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.  An additional 3rd year dedicated to scholarly activity is currently funded from alternate sources. We aim to attract and develop highly motivated, intelligent, and exceptional candidates who will become leaders in the field of Pediatric Gastroenterology.

Our curriculum includes 9-11 blocks on inpatient service, 3 blocks of nutrition, plus 8 procedure blocks to focus and develop endoscopy skills as part of the first 2 years rotations. Focused research blocks and elective blocks round out the first 2 years. The third year is primarily for scholarly activity / research.

Academic / scholarly projects are expected during the clinical years with the major project being completed by the end of the third year. Academic / scholarly activity may include basic or clinical research, generally combined with a Masters degree in clinical epidemiology, education or public health.
