Faits saillants

The Western University neurosurgery program’s strength is in training highly competent, technically skilled neurosurgeons. This is accomplished through our high case volume and independence-oriented training. Particular clinical strengths of the program include vascular and endovascular therapy as well as functional, stereotactic and epilepsy surgery.

Other highlights include:

  • Among the top neurosurgical programs in Canada and is the only program in Canada with a 100% success rate of its trainees trained by neurosurgery giants in Canada
  • CBME program as of July 1st 2019 (Surgical Foundations in July 2018)
  • Resident learning is important to faculty, residents, and all staff (academic half day teaching, Grand Rounds, clinical learning, Neurosurgery Rookie Camp hosts in July 2019 and in July 2021)
  • Residents are encouraged to pursue educational and research opportunities outside of their training, e.g. Master’s and/or PhD (up to two years away)

À votre avis, quels sont les points forts de votre programme?
Independence inside and outside the OR, history of landmark trials that shaped today’s neurosurgical practice
Early operative exposure, epilepsy surgery, functional neurosurgery
Closely knit group of residents from all years. Great environment to form life long connections and career mentors
Neurosurgery is a busy specialty and maintaining extracurricular activities requires prioritizing what is most important for my well being. For instance, I continued to maintain my fitness throughout residency by cycling and going to the gym daily, but I could not find the time to work on art, camping, or other less prioritized activities
The staff are quite approachable which makes forming a connection with them and the rest of the residents more natural.
Finishing my chief time and focusing on studying for my final exams. Mostly, I’m looking forward to start my fellowship in functional neurosurgery in Atlanta, US.
