Renseignements généraux

The University of Toronto’s Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM) is recognized internationally for its clinical and educational excellence. The goal of the program is to prepare you to practice Family Medicine anywhere in the province (urban or rural) and the country.  The DFCM program has 5 Family Medicine residency streams you may apply to separately through CaRMS:

The same application should be submitted for each stream to which you apply. Only one application will be reviewed. Attendance at only 1 Virtual Interview Session is required if you apply to 1 or more of the 5 University of Toronto streams: Greater Toronto Area, Barrie or Newmarket, Midland or Orillia, Integrated Communities, and/or Integrated Communities – Uxbridge Markham. Your hospital teaching site is determined after the CaRMS match results, using a separate internal matching process. You will be asked to rank your preference of hospital teaching hospital sites available to you depending on the stream you have been matched to.

À votre avis, quels sont les points forts de votre programme?
1.Longitudinal/semi-block based curriculum: we are in the family medicine teaching unit 1.5 days a week throughout the two years of residency while rotating through different specialties. This means we are constantly applying new knowledge and skills gained through specialty rotations to our family medicine encounters, and greater continuity of care for our rostered patients. 2.Plenty of elective rotations to explore interests: At the Barrie site, currently there are 5 elective rotations in total during the two years of the program. This allows us to explore interests and practice settings outside of academic FM, and prepare for +1 program applications. 3.We get to manage our inbox for our rostered patients from day one: while this can be demanding at times, I feel this prepares us well for learning to be efficient with the administrative aspects of FM practice and take ownership for the care of our patients. I also feel a lot more comfortable jumping into locum practices after graduating because of this experience.
1.Excellent learning to service ratio: In most cases, FM residents are the only residents on a specialty service. The specialty services also do not rely on FM residents to function. Therefore, we tend to be first in line for seeing cases and trying to do procedures, and in most cases are treated as learners first rather than bodies on a service. I also feel our specialty rotation schedules are also made to prioritize learning and exposure. 2.City living with plethora of rural learning opportunities: Barrie is a medium-sized city, which means access to lots of great urban amenities (and specialists). However, it is a short drive away from smaller/more rural communities for elective experiences. E.g. Midland, Orillia, Collingwood.
There are only 9 of us per cohort, so I’d say we are a pretty tight-knit group! My co-residents are often organizing social activities like going to the movies, bouldering, and beach days. Within the family medicine teaching unit and hospital, my experience has been that preceptors have been incredibly supportive and friendly. We are on first-name basis with many FM preceptors.
I’m big on ensuring my activities outside of work all contribute to my personal wellness! Outside of prioritizing sleep above all (very doable since we only have overnight calls in OBGYN rotation), I make sure to get to the gym 2-4 times a week depending on the rotation. When the weather is nice, I like to go for a run by the waterfront, explore the many hiking trails in the area, or just sit by the water and chill. You can also find me cooking up a storm, or hanging out with my partner or friends.
All the residents are protected from call for a weekend for our annual residents retreat, which is a great way to spend some time with the fellow residents at our site. During the year the program has organized balint groups as a part of the academic half day, which is meant as an opportunity to for us to discuss challenges and reflections as a group with respect to wellness with a physician facilitator who is not affiliated with our program. We are also set up with a faculty mentor from day one, whose role is to connect with us throughout residency for check ins and provide guidance.
I’m looking forward to my Teaching Practice placement in Kenora, Ontario, where I’ll hopefully get a better sense sense of rural/remote family medicine and learn to be more independent as a resident! As much as I’ve enjoyed my residency experience, I am definitely looking forward to moving on to attendinghood as well.
