First time success at the Royal College Surgical Foundations and Final Speciality Certification Examinations is above the national average.

Excellent working relationships with interventional radiologists, oncologists and uro-pathologists augment the teaching and clinical environment.

Residents selected to the Ottawa Residency Training Program must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, empathy and integrity and must fit into the collegial mold of the program.

Ottawa parliament buildings from the river
Ottawa
Ottawa is Canada’s capital, in the east of southern Ontario, near the city of Montréal and the U.S. border. Sitting on the Ottawa River, it has at its centre Parliament Hill, with grand Victorian architecture and museums such as the National Gallery of Canada, with noted collections of indigenous and other Canadian art. The park-lined Rideau Canal is filled with boats in summer and ice-skaters in winter.

Our graduates follow a variety of career paths upon graduation. For graduates from 2015-2020: 5 currently in fellowship, 8 went directly to community practice, 4 completed a fellowship and went to community practice, and 4 completed a fellowship and are in academic practice. Almost all graduates remain in Canada, but are located across the country.

All residents participate in research, and there is a wide variety of project types and complexity. We have a dedicated faculty member serve as resident research director, multiple faculty with dedicated research time and research assistant support, and unlimited access to the uOttawa research methods centre for statistical support. Residents are encouraged to present their work annually at our uOttawa Urology Research Day, and receive financial support to travel to conferences to present their work.

At uOttawa urology we have a highly collegial and supportive environment that allows for many opportunities for informal mentorship, discussions regarding career path/subspecialty interests, and direction regarding fellowship choice. There is very strong support for new/junior residents by more senior residents. We also have in place a formal process for career counselling that includes semi-annual resident meetings with the RPC, a dedicated scheduled meeting with the PD, and a career planning timeline/checklist included in our resident manual.

We have a very high clinical and surgical volume across all subspecialties of urology including oncology, stones/endourology, MIS surgery and Robotic surgery, renal transplantation, paediatric urology, reconstructive urology, female urology, and men’s health/infertility. Our residents participate in cases from a very early stage in training, and have ample opportunity for repetition and progressive independence in the OR.
