Faits saillants

The General Surgery Program at the University of Ottawa is ideal for those interested in either an academic or a  community practice.  We strive to teach technical excellence and sound clinical judgement in a collegial and respectful learning environment. We have a Skills and Simulation Centre that provides excellent training in laparoscopic, robotic, and open techniques as well as team-based training. We offer a comprehensive Surgical Scientist Program (SSP) for those interested in academic surgery. We also provide excellent opportunities to obtain firsthand General Surgery experience within a community setting at one of our partnering hospitals.

The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) serves a population of 1.3 million people in Eastern Ontario. TOH, which is the main teaching hospital across 3 sites, has over 1400 beds with a high-volume trauma and cancer centre. TOH performs over 80,000 surgeries per year. The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute ranks among the top hospital-based research institutes in Canada with more than $150 million in research funding. There are a variety of graduate programs available to our residents in the following domains: Basic Science Research, Clinical Epidemiology, Health Administration, Education, and Public Health etc. Residents are supported by the Ottawa Hospital Research Methods Center which helps in Clinical Design, Biostatistics and Economic analysis etc.

The city of Ottawa is home to more than a million people. It is a vibrant bilingual, cosmopolitan, and multicultural capital. The city itself is beautiful with large parks, the Rideau Canal and Ottawa River, numerous bicycle paths, and plenty of green space.  As Canada’s capital city, we are home to arts establishments and National museums. Ottawa also has many cultural and sporting events such as Ottawa Race Weekend, Winterlude, The Tulip Festival, Canada Day celebrations, and countless music festivals.

Ottawa parliament buildings from the river
Ottawa
Ottawa is Canada’s capital, in the east of southern Ontario, near the city of Montréal and the U.S. border. Sitting on the Ottawa River, it has at its centre Parliament Hill, with grand Victorian architecture and museums such as the National Gallery of Canada, with noted collections of indigenous and other Canadian art. The park-lined Rideau Canal is filled with boats in summer and ice-skaters in winter.
