Do I need to submit a different application for each track that I want to apply to?

Yes, if you are planning to apply to multiple tracks, please submit an application for each track.

Do I need to submit a personalized letter for each track that I’ve applied to?

Applicants are encouraged to write a different targeted personal letter for each track they want to apply to, especially for the applicants who want to apply to the Vancouver Island and Prince George tracks. This will help the Program understand the reasons for applying to specific tracks.

Is a CV or custom resume required for the CaRMS application?

CVs or resumes are optional as the CaRMS application forms include all necessary fields that would be present on a CV (e.g. work experience, research experience, interest, etc.).

Can I submit more than three reference letters that were outlined in the CaRMS description?

Our Selections Committee will only review the first three reference letters that you submit due to time constraints.

I am currently in the process of completing a dual degree (MD/MSC). Do I need to upload a copy of my masters transcript?

Yes, please upload a copy your Masters transcript to your CaRMS application. Our reviewers will take this into account when reviewing your file.

Will your program give preference to graduates of UBC?

We do not give preference to students who are graduates of UBC when creating our rank lists. Every applicant will be scored in a standardized fashion.

I applied to multiple UBC psychiatry tracks. Will I be interviewed on the same day or over the course of a few days?

All shortlisted candidates who applied multiple streams/tracks will compete all their interviews on the same day.

After speaking with residents and faculty during the interview day, I might decide that I also want to apply to other tracks. Is this possible? What is the deadline for this?

Yes, candidates are able to apply for additional tracks (except for Prince George and Research tracks) after your interview date, and up to at least 1 to 1.5 weeks before the ranking list submission deadline.

Q: What is Competitive stream and how is it different from CMG stream?

For the 2024 CaRMS match, the British Columbia Ministry of Health are funding new residency positions in what they have termed, the “Competitive Stream”. Application to these positions are open to both Canadian Medical Graduates (CMG’s) and International Medical Graduates (IMG’s) and this stream will be a separate track which would be ranked just like the other tracks in our program. The positions in this stream will require a 3 year Return of Service (ROS), but this ROS can be anywhere in the province, either urban or rural including in greater Vancouver, and can be in any sort of clinical practice of interest to the resident. At UBC, there are 5 Competitive Stream positions which are distributed amoungst the tracks as follows: Vancouver Track – 1 position Fraser Track – 2 positions Vancouver Island Track – 1 position Interior Track – 1 position

The strength of the Vancouver Track program is the diversity of experience each learning site offers while still providing excellent training for core rotations. St. Paul’s Hospital functions within an inner-city community and allows for the development of expertise in addictions. Vancouver General Hospital has opportunities in tertiary mental health services and a unique “walk-in clinic” style of service with its Access and Assessment Centre. UBC Hospital’s Mood Disorders Clinic, BC Psychosis Program and Provincial Neuropsychiatric Program are specialized centres for psychiatric treatment. BC Children’s Hospital hosts the Compass Program to provide support for youth across the province, as well as numerous tertiary specialty clinics and inpatient units that serve the entire province. Lion’s Gate Hospital and Richmond Hospital are community hospitals serving their local populations with their own unique characteristics in a conventional setting. These diverse experiences can be accessed during the core (PGY1-4) rotations. Residents are encouraged to rotate through as many sites as possible so as to be the most well-rounded psychiatrists possible upon graduation.

The UBC Vancouver Track Psychiatry Residency Program (UBC-VT) is located within the City of Vancouver and its suburbs, a region which has scored in the top 5 of The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2023 Global Livability Index. The Vancouver Track is based out of the five main teaching hospitals and numerous satellite sites located throughout Vancouver, North Vancouver, and Richmond. Its health authority, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), serves a population of over 1.25 million residents who are incredibly diverse in terms of language, demographics, and cultures. Vancouver Coastal Health also provides specialized, complex care and tertiary services for people throughout BC, and serves as the province’s hub for health care education and research.
