Renseignements généraux

The Hamilton site consists of three separate teaching units: McMaster Family Practice, Stonechurch Family Health Centre, and Community-based Residency Teaching. Residents request their unit of preference via an internal match following a successful CaRMS match.

McMaster Family Practice (MFP) and Stonechurch Family Health Centre (SFHC) are large academic units with a depth of resources. Residents in these settings will experience multidisciplinary team-based care, dedicated supervision, and formal teaching sessions on site. Both units use our unique electronic medical record system, OSCAR, which is an open source web-based electronic patient record system for delivery of evidence-based resources at point of care.

The Community-Based Residency Teaching (CBRT) Unit will appeal to those who prefer a community practice, and a one-to-one preceptor model. CBRT practices are located in and around the Hamilton region (30 minute driving radius).

All Hamilton residents, regardless of teaching unit, come together weekly for InQuiry, Priority Plus Topics academic sessions (PPT) and Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences (MHBS) at the David Braley Health Sciences Centre (DBHSC).

Hamilton cityscape
Hamilton
Hamilton is a Canadian port city on the western tip of Lake Ontario. The Niagara Escarpment, a huge, forested ridge known locally as “the mountain” and dotted with conservation areas and waterfalls, divides the city. The long-distance Bruce Trail runs along the escarpment. HMCS Haida, a naval warship on the city’s lakefront, and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in the south, trace Canada’s military past.

À votre avis, quels sont les points forts de votre programme?
In my opinion, the highlights of our program include supportive co-residents and staff, Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences (MHBS), and the Pediatric Emergency Rotation. I like how each week, we have the opportunity to share difficult cases with our small group and feel comfortable to do so, because we have the same groups throughout the 2-year training program. I also thought that the Pediatric Emergency Rotation was unique, as not many programs have this, and provided very relevant pediatric experience.
What I’ve enjoyed about being a resident at the Hamilton site, is being a part of a cohort that is small enough to form bonds with my co-residents, while having individualized support from my preceptor, and also having access to tertiary care centres. I appreciate that the site matched me to a preceptor that would be able to help reach my learning goals. For instance, I have an interest in Care of the Elderly, and feel very fortunate to work with the Care of the Elderly Director at McMaster to learn about how he approaches cases and manages the older adults in his practice. Being in Hamilton has also allowed me to explore other specialties on electives such as Addictions and Chronic Pain, and I appreciate the opportunity to gain experience in these areas.
I feel like we have a very supportive community within the program. All of the residents are always keen to help each other out by sharing tips from the different rotations or simply listening to one another. At times, residency can be challenging, but there’s always someone available to lean on for support!
Outside of residency, I’ve enjoyed playing on an intramural soccer team composed of residents from different years and programs, going for spontaneous hikes, and exploring the amazing food scene in Hamilton! As someone who eats plant-based and has a peanut allergy, I’ve been really pleased to find many restaurants that can accomodate my dietary restrictions and make delicious food.
The program fosters wellness through regular town halls and check-ins with our preceptors to discuss ways to improve wellness in our program. I appreciate that we have regular check-ins with our primary preceptor that give us an avenue to talk about how we’ve been feeling with someone we’re familiar with and brainstorm ways to improve our wellbeing. We also have resident-led groups such as the Stonechurch Resident Wellness Group and the McMaster Family Practice Wellness Group that have been doing a wonderful job at planning social events and wellness talks to help us take care of ourselves!
I am most looking forward to hanging out with my co-residents in person and seeing their lovely maskless faces. I am hopeful that the residents will be able to have a retreat this year!
