1) THE BREADTH and DIVERSITY OF PATIENTS

  1. BC’s Children’s Hospital is the only pediatric tertiary care centre in the province of British Columbia; consequently, the Division of Respiratory Medicine provides care across the full range of pediatric respiratory diseases to all of the children across the province
  2. Busy inpatient consultation service to the inpatient wards, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, emergency department and community  care providers; primary management of patients with cystic fibrosis, non-CF bronchiectasis, and children who are chronically ventilated patients
  3. Multi-disciplinary clinics for cystic fibrosis, severe asthma, sleep medicine, primary ciliary dyskinesia, interstitial lung disease, respiratory/immunology and home ventilation as well as busy general respiratory consult clinic

2) EXPERTISE AND COLLEGIALITY OF OUR STAFF

  1. Close-knit, collegial physician and allied health staff that provide a positive learning environment and model for work-life balance
  2. Staff with a wide range of clinical and academic interests including cystic fibrosis, severe asthma, interstitial lung disease, primary ciliary dyskinesia, sleep medicine, home ventillation, non-CF bronchiectasis, lung imaging, novel lung function techniques, home sleep studies
  3. Physicians are involved at the provincial, national and international level in clinical practice guidelines, research collaborations, advocacy

3) THE FACILITIES

  1. All consultants are trained in pediatric bronchoscopy and there is ample opportunity for trainees to gain flexible bronchoscopy experience.  We have dedicated OR days including a combined ENT/respiratory OR for patients with complex aerodigestive issues
  2. Busy pulmonary function lab (>2500 tests/yr) and sleep lab (>300tests/yr)
  3. Equipment to do the full breadth of lung function testing including multiple breath washout, nasal nitric oxide and oscillometry
  4. Teck Acute Care Centre opened in 2017 and provides state of the art inpatient facilities

4) SUPPORT FOR TRAINEES

  1. Staff members that are committed to training the next generation of pediatric respirologists with Education being one of the four pillars of our division (Clinical Care, Advocacy, Research, Education)
  2. Funding to attend national or international conferences
  3. Funding to attend a Bronchoscopy Training Course
  4. Staff support to complete a range of scholarly projects including clinical research, care pathways or quality improvement

General Information

This residency program is for 2 years.

Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.

 

Program Rotations

The program consists of 26, 4-week blocks over 2 years

Our program transitioned to Competency by Design in July 2021 and duration of rotations is approximate and can be adjusted to meet the learning needs of the trainee.
 
Description

 

 
Inpatient wards and consultation

Primary team for patients admitted under Respirology and Consulting service for the hospital and province

(divided into Inpatient junior and senior blocks)

 
Outpatient Clinics

Multidisciplinary Clinics in Cystic Fibrosis, Home Tracheostomy and Ventilation, Severe Asthma, Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, Sleep, and Interstitial Lung Disease as well as clinics in General Respiratory Consults

Includes Longitudinal Resident Clinic

 
Pulmonary Function Lab

Rotation in the Pulmonary Function lab to learn how tests are done and what is involved in running a PFT laboratory

Sleep Medicine

Rotation focused on Sleep Clinics and in the Polysomnography Laboratory to understand how PSGs are done, scored and interpreted

 

1 block
Intensive Care (Pediatric or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or Respiratory Therapist)

Rotation focusing on ventilation and acute care of patients with respiratory issues either by spending time in the PICU or NICU or with the respiratory therapists who are first responders to acute respiratory issues on the ward and in the ED

Rounds that rotate weekly between Research, Quality Improvement/Morbidity and Mortality Rounds/Allied Health Rounds, Resident Presentations and Journal Club

Review of chest imaging with the radiologist specializing in chest imaging

Radiology Pathology Rounds

Review of clinical cases with accompanying radiology and pathology in conjunction with the Radiology and Pathology Departments

Complex Aerodigestive Surgical Disorders Rounds

Review of complex aerodigestive cases in conjunction with ENT, General Surgery, Anesthesia, Gastroenterology

Sessions focusing on intrinsic CANMEDs roles

Cross Canada Rounds

We participate in the national Cross Canada Rounds where pediatric respirology fellows present cases to respirologists and other pediatric respirology fellows across the country
