Program Highlights

BC Children’s Hospital provides all of the tertiary Pediatric care of the province and serves approximately 1 million children. Our clinical staff includes 6 Endocrinologists, subspecialty residents, Pediatric residents and medical students. We have a monthly multidisciplinary gender committee meeting. We participate in city-wide Endocrinology rounds with our adult colleagues. We review endocrine topics with weekly PBL cases, formal presentations and journal clubs. There is a weekly Endocrinology half-day run in conjunction with the Adult Endocrinology fellows. There also are site-wide half-days for the Pediatric subspecialty residents.

We have an active research program. Our clinical research focuses on obesity and type 2 diabetes in special populations (First Nations people and patients with mental health disorders). The laboratory research focuses on islet cell physiology (Dr. Bruce Verchere). The very active program is looking at potential triggers for Type 1 and type 2 diabetes, mechanisms of islet cell death, and potential interventions. There is a link to the islet cell transplant team at Vancouver Hospital. There is an active working group, the CIHR New Emerging Team in Childhood Autoimmunity, where fellows can receive training in Immunology and Diabetes. Dr. Chanoine has an interest in global health research. We are also participating in TrialNet (a Type 1 Diabetes natural history study)  There are some industry sponsored trials.
