Swift Current
The Swift Current Creek meanders through the prairie from the Cypress Hills to the South Saskatchewan River. The First Nations People knew this creek well. They camped along its banks for centuries. Later, when the fur traders found and forded the creek on their westward treks, they named it “Riviere Au Courant”, or Swift Current.

Resident Experience

Emerveer Khosa
PGY-1
In your opinion, what are the highlights of your program?
“The highlights of the family medicine residency program in Swift Current include the plus one training in Emergency medicine that can be done here! We have a great sim lab that’s used regularly to help residents train in high stress situations to help them become more comfortable at managing such situations. The program is not too small or large, but the perfect size. Residents get one to one training with preceptors and even have two faculty advisors each that help guide and provide advice to residents throughout their busy time in residency. Being a smaller program allows the staff to form tighter bonds to the point where we love to see each other outside of work for fun activities!”
The staff is incredible and is easily accessible at all times. Having a small program with only 3 other first year residents allows for a lot of one on one time with preceptors. We ask questions openly and have thorough discussions of cases and topics, allowing us to receive ample opportunity to learn. Each resident gets two faculty advisors and is paired together with an R2 to help them through what can be a scary process of going through residency.
The staff in Swift Current have worked together for years now. They know each other quite well, which allows for a tight bond between members of the residency program. As a a new member of the program, I have never felt out of place or overlooked, but have been welcomed with open arms and was easily able to fit right in. Faculty is conveniently accessible when needed and are always checking in to see how the residents are doing at any opportunity they can.

“The faculty in Swift Current are constantly checking in on us residents to ensure that we’re doing okay from more than just a medical standpoint, but a mental standpoint as well. They even organised a picnic to welcome the residents to Swift Current so that we would feel more at home when we first got here. A scavenger hunt was planned and organised for the residents to undertake all around the city of Swift Current, which allowed us to explore the city and the local shops in a fun way! We even got prizes at the end! The atmosphere is very friendly. Staff is readily available to residents if needed to discuss any issues or concerns they may be having. “
Learning more and more so that I can improve my skills as a resident! :)
