Program Highlights

The Anesthesia Resident training program at the University of Manitoba offers a wide array of clinical and academic opportunities both locally and internationally. The Department of Anesthesia at the University of Manitoba is a broad-based clinical program committed to producing high caliber anesthesiologists who will go on to fulfill leading roles, enriching their future departments and the specialty as a whole. The program is structured around basic clinical excellence as the core, with sufficient flexibility to allow the resident to tailor the training to particular areas of interest in research, teaching, administration or clinical sub-specialty. The administration is guided by the philosophy that all successful Anesthesiologists must first be well-rounded clinicians, and that the growth of the specialty depends on those individuals with special talents to develop in those directions. The clinical exposure in the program is primarily focused at the two tertiary hospitals, Health Sciences Centre and the St. Boniface Hospital. In addition to time spent in these sites, the Children’s Hospital provides pediatric experience, Pain management at Pan Am, and community rotations are offered at Concordia, The Grace and Victoria General Hospitals.

Resident well-being and continued support is an important focus in our program. A resident retreat is organized on an annual basis by our resident social representatives which includes a full day of non- clinical activities that allow all residents to network and build a rapport with one another. In addition, a Physician wellness curriculum is offered to residents to build and maintain the tools to cope with stress both within and outside the program.
