Dr. Andrew Latus
Program Director
Jackie Doran
The Discipline of Psychiatry at Memorial University offers a broad and solid foundation in general psychiatry. We strive to train residents with excellent clinical skills for patients across a lifespan, in a curriculum that promotes continuing professional development, social accountability and wellness. We are large enough as a program to offer a diverse range of clinical experiences but small enough to allow for easy communication and collaboration amongst faculty and residents. PGY 1 residents in our program are engaged with their “home” program from the commencement of residency. Our academic curriculum has been tailored to meet the requirements of Competence by Design and our transition has been guided by a dedicated faculty and our Discipline Chair, who is also the Chair of the Specialty Committee for Psychiatry at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. For residents who have an interest in pursuing other roles, there are longitudinal experiences in research, medical education, and administrative psychiatry, which are facilitated and mentored.
Please feel free to email Dr. Noble with any questions at snoble@mun.ca.
Similarly, our co-administrative residents are happy to hear from you and can be found at sara.dalley@mun.ca or dclundrigan@mun.ca.

The majority of clinical rotations occur in the city of St. John’s. In the first year, residents spend four weeks in Grand Falls-Windsor (a town with a population of about 15,000 people, located approximately 4.5 hours from St. John’s), which is an active teaching site of Memorial University with a faculty of academic psychiatrists. Residents work directly with an addictions psychiatrist and also have the advantage of early exposure to rural psychiatry, should this be an area of interest.
PGY 2 residents in the Foundations stage of training have the option to spend part of their general psychiatry year in Grand Falls-Windsor. Residents who have availed of this opportunity have valued the experience. Similarly, residents can also spend up to six months in Saint John, New Brunswick, during PGY 2.
Grand Falls-Windsor also offers an excellent rotation in shared-care psychiatry in a multi-disciplinary clinic of family physicians and psychiatrists for PGY 4 residents.
Yes. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has an agreement with the Government of New Brunswick permitting residents in our program to complete core rotations in that province. Residents can also complete up to six months of electives outside NL during the Transition to Practice year, which facilitates subspecialty interests and fellowship training.
