Resident Experience

McGill University – Internal Medicine – Montreal
Amanda Marino
PGY-2
What separates the Internal Medicine program at McGill from others is the collegial environment. Every morning, I am greeted with a smile from my co-residents, attending physician and multidisciplinary team. There is always someone offering their help and you really feel part of a team, working towards common goals.
Although most of my residency has been during COVID, I have felt well supported and surrounded in the program. I have met colleagues who have become incredible friends and supervisors who have become amazing mentors. This has provided me with a sense of belonging, motivation, and comfort in medicine.
The Internal Medicine program at McGill feels like a family. We are a tight knit community who look out for each other, no matter what rotation you are on. With the medium size program, you get to know most of the residents from PGY-1 to PGY-3 which means you always have someone to eat lunch with and there are many familiar and supportive faces on your night shifts!
Outside of the hospital, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing soccer and playing the guitar. I have been able to maintain many of my hobbies throughout residency and always ensure I set time aside during the week to pursue these activities.
McGill fosters a culture of talking about challenges and struggles faced, whether personally or professionally with co-residents and attending physicians. The IMthere4U mentorship program, started by residents for residents, where each R1 is paired with a senior resident and staff who serve as mentors and encourages open and honest discussions. Furthermore, there are many resources available to residents through the WELL Office, including counselling that are easily accessible.
In the next year, I am looking forward to being able to attend outside events with my co-residents including our annual skit night.
