Resident Experience

It’s the perfect mix of feeling small (get to know the staff, allied health, and co-residents very closely; develop a true sense of community at work) & feeling big (the IWK is the tertiary center for the three Maritime provinces)
I really enjoy the work culture at the IWK. I also appreciate how we have plenty of hands-on experiences and 1-on-1 with staff, since we are a small group of trainees. Weekly mock codes (simulation) are also a highlight.
The community is one of the aspects that drew me out East for residency. I think it is something truly special. People are incredibly friendly and supportive, both within our residency group and within the hospital.
Halifax is a great place to live. The city is super walk-able, plenty of excellent spots for food, and you are always close to the ocean. Personally, I spend most of my free time outside – trail running, cycling, swimming in the lakes, walking at the beach, hiking or backpacking, and cross-country skiing (when there is enough snow!). I love how there is so much to explore within the Maritimes – a couple of hours any direction will bring you to a great destination.
I think we foster wellness in the day-to-day by striving to strike a balance between learning and service, appreciating that everyone has things they love outside of work, being respectful of each other’s time and efforts, and maintaining a pleasant and collegial work environment. As a group, we enjoy celebrating both the big and the small.
Honestly, I am looking forward to post-pandemic life when friends and family can more readily come visit and explore. I am looking forward to showing them all of my favourite places and activities.
