Established in 1969 and fully accredited in 1971 – our program has strong historical roots and we continue to strive to improve the program every year with a goal of providing a world-class neurology education.

 

Numerous initiatives (expansion of longitudinal clinics, hierarchical resident integration on-call and on CTU, annual OSCEs, focused research and clinical streams, focused rotations in nearly all sub-specialties) have enriched the neurology residency program resulting in residents expressing high levels of satisfaction with their education. This has lead to recruitment of excellent Canadian Medical Graduates and International Medical Graduates over the past number of years. It is our residents who continue to excel and create an environment of both clinical excellence and academic success.

 

In addition to traditional weekly neuroscience rounds, the Division of Neurology has a wide spectrum of subspecialty rounds: neurovascular, stroke research, neuromuscular, neuro-ophthalmology/neuro-otology, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, journal club, and basic neuroscience.

 

The philosophy of our residency program has always been to offer a wide exposure to all aspects of clinical neurology, as well as academic research and the basic sciences, which are so vital to understanding neurological disease. It is our goal to support residents in their chosen area of interest. Our resident graduates have been well prepared to ultimately pursue any career path they may choose: community or academic practice; with pure clinical, administrative, education and/or research interests. We are proud of our resident graduates who have secured competitive fellowships in Canada, the US, and overseas. In addition, after completing their training our graduates have assumed both community Neurology and full-time academic positions at prestigious hospitals and institutions throughout Canada and the US. Many of our former residents are presently staff members in the Division including both part-time and full time staff.

The park-lined Rideau Canal is filled with boats in summer and ice-skaters in winter.

À votre avis, quels sont les points forts de votre programme?
The highlights of the program are numerous! At the end of PGY1, you will choose a dedicated research or clinical stream based on your career goals – both are equally well supported and equally encouraged, so this program is a great fit for those yet undecided on a specific career stream (i.e. academic vs. community practice). In your senior years, you will have your own longitudinal clinic where you follow your own patients. This program has had a 100% pass rate on the Royal College exam over the last 20+ years of resident cohorts! There are unique opportunities for outreach clinics in Nunavut, and the program has an extremely supportive culture surrounding family planning/parental leave during residency.
As a resident in Ottawa, you get the best of both worlds: you are at a program with all subspecialties represented where you can realize your career goals, whether that’s pursuing fellowship at an Ivy League institution, going directly into community practice, or anything in between – all while still reaping all the benefits of our small-program feel and close-knit resident and staff group.
Within the program, the community is extremely close-knit and collegial! Despite all of us having lives and communities outside of residency, we all still choose to spend a decent chunk of our free time together, for example: residents working out with staff at the hospital gym, residents going to afternoon spin class together after Tuesday half-days, taking trips away together, regularly having dinners together as a large group or as a single cohort.
As a general rule, residents in our program have vibrant lives and priorities outside of medicine. Several residents are heavily involved in athleticism of various types (e.g. cycling, yoga, weightlifting) while many of our residents are also raising small children at home, sometimes with other residents! (i.e. our scheduling is flexible).
We have a very reasonable call frequency (4-5 calls per 4-week block as a PGY1, and this frequency decreases as you get more senior). Mandatory, consistently enforced post-call days with absolutely no post-call rounding (morning handover happens at 8, and you usually will leave the hospital by 8:30). We also have monthly Wellness Rounds during academic half-day where we are divided into small groups (residents only) and discuss recent victories or things we struggle with and/or want guidance on. We have an extremely close-knit resident cohort that supports one another extensively (see above). We also have a generous resident wellness budget, allowing for group dinners out, 1-2 retreats/year, free snacks in the resident room, and yearly gift cards with any leftover funds (previous years, we each received $100 gifts cards to a spa, Lululemon, Starbucks, etc.). We also have an extremely supportive program director (Dr. Lelli) and program coordinator (Janis) who have strong track records for advocating for resident wellness.
I’m looking forward to exploring more of the many nature trails in Ottawa and surrounding areas. Of course we are all looking forward to getting to welcome another brilliant cohort of new residents to our Ottawa family!

Formal telephone interviews will not be offered, though if there are technical issues with the video-conferenced interview a phone interview may be used as a backup option.

A meeting with some of our residents is part of our formal interview process in addition to multiple residency information sessions which are hosted in the fall by our residents. They provide the opportunity to learn about the program and ask specific questions about the program. Specific dates for those sessions will be available via CANPREPP and on our Instagram page. Email addresses for our residents will be made available by request.  Please email your request to the Program Administrator.

Each candidate will have three interviews lasting 20 to 30 minutes with 2 members of the program, including the Program Director, members of the selection committee, and the co-chief residents. The interviews will be conducted via Zoom. A lunch and learn presentation about the Ottawa Adult Neurology Residency Program are also a part of the agenda, again to be delivered virtually.

Interviews are virtual, and all required information should be submitted to CaRMS based on the list of required documents.
