The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT offers a 3 year Royal College accredited fellowship program.  Curriculum and assessment system are in accordance with Competence By Design as of July 1, 2021.  Flexible elective opportunities available in final year of training. The program offers comprehensive training in the clinical and laboratory skills related to this subspecialty. Trainees are expected to develop a critical and analytical approach to clinical problems based on a solid foundation in the basic sciences, together with a comprehensive knowledge of clinical and laboratory Hematology/Oncology. For those candidates wishing to develop a research career, a second major objective is the development of specific basic and clinical research skills. A third objective is the development of teaching skills, with particular emphasis on developing the trainee’s ability to deliver well-organized and critical presentations on a variety of clinical and scientific topics. At the completion of training, it is expected that the trainee will be a competent and independent consultant in clinical Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT, and will be able to counsel parents, patients and others in all aspects of Oncology and Hematology. As well, they should have acquired critical analytic skills, and an inquiring mind to further pursue expertise in research, education and improving standards of clinical care.

Renseignements généraux

This residency program is for 3 years.

Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.

 

The major objective of this program is to fully equip trainees for careers in the tertiary care of patients with Pediatric malignancies and blood disorders.  The rotational and academic curriculum is mapped to the Competence By Design Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and is in accordance with the Training Experiences document.

An approximate template of rotational training experiences in our program is as follows:

2 months Jr. Fellow (combined Oncology Inpatient, Hematology service, Outpatient Clinic and Orientation)

5 months Oncology/BMT Inpatient and Consultation Service – BC Children’s Hospital

5 months Hematology Consultation – BC Children’s Hospital

3 months Hematology/Oncology/BMT Outpatient Clinic (including LTFU clinics) – BC Children’s Hospital

4 months Laboratory (Hematopathology, Cytogenetics, Transfusion Medicine) – BC Children’s Hospital/Vancouver General Hospital

1 month Adult Hematology – VGH/BCCA

3 months Research – BC Children’s Hospital

1 month Radiation Oncology

1 month Palliative Care

1 month NeuroOnology

1 month Pediatric HSCT (Pediatric Hematolpoietic Stem Cell Transplantation exposure is met with longitudinal equivalent of > 3 months throughout our three year training program in addition to concentrated Sr. resident level Pediatric HSCT rotation)

1 month Junior Attending

8 months – additional Clinical/Research/Scholarly Activities directed at trainee’s interested as approved by Program Director
