The Division of Hematology at UBC offers a 2 year Royal College accredited fellowship program for eligible trainees. The main goal of our program is to train candidates to become competent hematology consultants. This is accomplished through a variety of rotations and training sites in our program. The candidates are expected to sit the Royal College accreditation exam at the end of their 2 year fellowship program.

This residency program is for 2 years.

Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.

 

Objectives of the Hematology Fellowship:

  1. The development of clinical skills necessary to appropriately evaluate, diagnose and manage a wide spectrum of hematologic disorders.
  2. The acquisition of hematopathology laboratory skills:
    • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.
    • Interpretation of peripheral blood films.
    • Interpretation of bone marrow aspiration and biopsy specimens.
    • Interpretation of Coagulation assays and special hematological tests.
    • Principles of transfusion medicine.
    • Principles of apheresis.
  3. Clinical research methodology.
  4. Critical appraisal of literature.

Rotations: 4 week blocks

6 blocks of Consultative Hematology (2-3 blocks at VGH, 2-3 blocks at SPH, 1 block in Victoria or Kelowna)

3 blocks of Leukemia/BMT at VGH (2 blocks in patient ward, 1 block outpatient)

2 blocks of Lymphoma at BCCA, Surrey site or Vancouver site

1 block Pediatric hematology at BCCH

7 blocks of Laboratory Hematology

3 blocks at VGH
2 blocks at SPH
1 block at BCCH
1 block Transfusion Medicine at VGH

1 block of Thrombosis

½ block of Apheresis

4 – 5 blocks of Research/Elective

Outpatient Clinics

  1. R4 Longitudinal clinic. Weekly scheduled clinics with an assigned staff for 1 year in duration.
  2. Trainee will be assigned to one of the following subspecialty clinics.
    • Hemophilia Clinic R5
    • BCWH Pregnancy clinic R5,
    • Malignant Hematology, R5, 6 months

Academic activities:

Weekly journal club
Weekly scheduled academic half days, Tuesday 1600 – 1800
Weekly rounds
Hematology Lecture series
Morphology rounds
