The Plastic Surgery Residency program at Western is a 5-year comprehensive training program accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The current Program Director is Dr. Aaron Grant and the Training Program accepts two new residents per year.
The core surgery and specialty training years are centred at the teaching hospitals of Western University (London Health Sciences Centre comprised of University Hospital, Victoria Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario) and St. Joseph’s Health Centre.
The first year of residency consists of:
(each block is 4 weeks in length)
The second core surgery year is spent primarily on service at the three hospital sites. All residents complete a dedicated Burns rotation at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto and complete at least one research block. A Masters of Surgery is available which includes 5 dedicated Research blocks. Community Plastics is an option for residents who do not wish to pursue their Masters.
The senior years of residency are dedicated to plastic surgery rotations with a 6-week elective in fourth year. Teaching and surgical case exposure is on an incremental basis over the five years, leading to chief resident positions in each of three hospitals for four month rotations in the final year. Various plastic surgery sub-specialty units exist at the three teaching hospitals including craniofacial surgery, burn surgery, micro and hand surgery and aesthetic surgery.
