The Department of Otolaryngology — Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Toronto is at the forefront of medical education for our specialty at the undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education levels. Notable highlights include:

Renseignements généraux

The Otolaryngology — Head & Neck Surgery program at the University of Toronto consists of 1 year of Surgical Foundations training followed by 4 years of specialty training at University of Toronto teaching hospitals. The education program attracts highly motivated trainees with an annual enrollment of 25-30 residents and over 20 clinical and research fellows.

Toronto, the capital of the province of Ontario, is a major Canadian city along Lake Ontario’s northwestern shore. It’s a dynamic metropolis with a core of soaring skyscrapers, all dwarfed by the iconic, free-standing CN Tower. Toronto also has many green spaces, from the orderly oval of Queen’s Park to 400-acre High Park and its trails, sports facilities and zoo.

Residents are required to complete one research project per year that is presented at the annual resident research day. Residents in the second year of training participate in a four month research block and research curriculum. Residents have the opportunity to consider enrollment in a graduate degree program.

 

Graduates of the Toronto program are highly successful in achieving fellowship positions in the top programs in Canada, US and internationally.

 

Residents are introduced to the operating room in the first year of training.

 

Approximately 65% of graduates pursue fellowship training. The remainder are successful in attaining a community position.

 

In the first year of training, residents complete one month rotations in Anesthesia, Neurosurgery, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and Radiology. In second year residents complete rotations in General Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Intensive Care Medicine.
