Faits saillants

The Urology Residency program at the University of Manitoba has been training leaders in urologic surgery for over 40 years! Our program is an accredited, five-year program, that strives to train and develop competent and compassionate Urologists. Our trainees dedicate themselves to the high standards of urological practice and contribute to the provision of patient-centered care. Our program carefully fuses a robust surgical volume, advanced didactic teaching schedule and unparalleled collegiality resulting in a well-balanced post-graduate training experience. The program is based out of the Health Sciences Centre, Children’s Hospital and St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. We primarily serve the City of Winnipeg, but also provide services to the Provinces of Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and Nunavut resulting in a catchment population of over 1.5 million people.

The program offers a wide range of adult and pediatric urological services, including urological oncology, endourology, infertility, andrology, reconstructive urology, voiding dysfunction, transplant urology and general urology. Staff are trained in open, laparascopic and microscopic surgery. The pediatric urologists provide tertiary care in virtually all aspects of pediatric urology. Residents gain a broad exposure to all sub-specialties in urology.

With commitment and dedication from all staff, we focus on the well-being and career development of our trainees.

Winnipeg
Winnipeg is the capital of the Canadian province of Manitoba. Its heart is The Forks, a historic site at the intersection of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, with warehouses converted to shops and restaurants, plus ample green space dedicated to festivals, concerts and exhibits. Nearby, the Exchange District is known for its well-preserved, early 20th-century architecture and numerous art galleries.

À votre avis, quels sont les points forts de votre programme?
There are numerous highlights to the Manitoba Urology program. Resident surgical exposure is excellent. We have large patient catchment and no fellows which allows us to participate in a wide breath of cases with large volumes. Our resident-attending relationship is very collegial and often extends beyond the walls of the hospital. The clinical and didactic teaching is rigorous and organized, including a mix of attending and resident led lectures and dedicated research time. These are just some of the many great things about our program.
In our program, residents are given a high degree of clinical autonomy relatively early in our training. This often translates to a high sense of self and patient satisfaction with the care we can provide. As with other residency programs, we are continuously learning new knowledge and skills that we can apply to patient care.
I’ve made some of the closest relationships in my life through this program. Our residents, both current and past, are all around fantastic people. I’m so lucky to call them colleagues and friends. Surgical residency is often busy and stressful but going into work and interacting with great people makes it worth it. Our resident cohort will often meet up outside of work to hang out. Overall, the community in the program is very collegial.
Life as a urology resident (as with most surgical residencies) is busy. Balancing heavy clinical duties, studying, administrative work, personal health, relationships and sleep can be a major challenge. That being said, I still am able to do many of the things I enjoy outside of work. Getting to the gym is still part of my regular weekly routine. In the summer months, I am able to play for my senior men’s soccer team about 3-4 times per week. Spending quality time with my girlfriend/family is very important to me and I try and set aside at least 1-2 evenings per week for this.
As a group, our call schedule is organized in such a way that maximizes weekends off so that residents have more time for wellness activities. Also, the program organizes frequent check-ins to bring up any wellness related concerns.
As we move up in our program, we get more opportunity to operate independently. I am definitely looking forward to this. Also, plans are currently in the works to expand on our comprehensive ambulatory urology care facility which will allow us even more opportunity for procedures, clinical encounters and provide better patient care. This is set to be built in the next 1-2 years and will be a great asset to our program.
