Every year, two residents with prior research experience and plans to become clinician scientists are accepted into the Research Track where they receive specific mentorship, protected research time, and funding to support their research career development. Research Track residents have additional time away from their clinical activities dedicated to research from 1 day per week in PGY2-PGY4 to up to 4 days per week in PGY5. Dr. Sophia Frangou, President’s Excellence Chair in Brain Health and Professor of Psychiatry is the Associate Director of the Research Track. She provides mentorship and overall oversight of the clinical and research training of the Research Track residents. Research Track residents are expected to develop their research plans under the supervision of a Scientific Supervisor selected from the academic faculty of the Department. Residents work together with the Program Director and the Scientific Supervisors to identify their goals and needs using a dedicated Research Plan template (doc).
The range of research activities offered is very wide from epidemiology to clinical trials, psychopharmacology, neuroimaging, neuromodulation, genetics/genomics, and preclinical models of brain processes. The Research track program is based in Vancouver. If a candidate wants to join the Research track and also be trained at other sites, we suggest that the candidate apply to other tracks rather than the Research track. Candidates can request to be transferred to the Research track after they are matched in CaRMS.
Yes, if you are planning to apply to multiple tracks, please submit an application for each track.
Applicants are encouraged to write a different targeted personal letter for each track they want to apply to, especially for the applicants who want to apply to the Vancouver Island and Prince George tracks. This will help the Program understand the reasons for applying to specific tracks.
Our Selections Committee will only review the first three reference letters that you submit due to time constraints.
Yes, please upload a copy your Masters transcript to your CaRMS application. Our reviewers will take this into account when reviewing your file.
We do not give preference to students who are graduates of UBC when creating our rank lists. Every applicant will be scored in a standardized fashion.
Candidates who are shortlisted for the Vancouver, Fraser, and/or Vancouver Island tracks will have one set of standard interviews (Program Director Interview, Mini Interview, and Panel Interview). When interviewing and ranking the candidates, our Selections Committee will keep in mind the tracks to which they have applied.
Candidates who are shortlisted for the Research and/or Prince George tracks, will have an additional interview for each track.
Candidates who are shortlisted for the Prince George and/or Research track will have an additional interview in addition to the standard interviews.
Candidates who are shortlisted for the Prince George track will have an additional interview with the Prince George Associate Program Director. Candidates who are shortlisted for the Research track will have an additional interview with the Research Track Associate Program Director, as well as a panel interview with the Research Track Selections Committee.
All of the interviews, including the additional interviews one may have for the Prince George and/or Research track, will happen on the same day.
Yes, candidates are able to apply for additional tracks (except for Prince George and Research tracks) after your interview date, and up to at least 1 to 1.5 weeks before the ranking list submission deadline.
All shortlisted candidates who applied multiple streams/tracks will compete all their interviews on the same day.
