Our five-year residency program offer trainees the opportunity to treat a broad spectrum of plastic surgery patients, including large volumes of general trauma cases, acute and reconstructive hand surgery, burn surgery and virtually all aspects of facial trauma.
Acute and reconstructive microsurgical experience is offered at the University of Alberta and Royal Alexandra hospitals.
Our residents work and learn in established outpatient clinics in brachial plexus and congenital hand issues, hand surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, general plastic surgery and burn surgery.
The Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM) unit at the Misericordia Community Hospital also offers experience in the use of Osseo integrated implants and maxillofacial prosthetics in a carefully selected group of patients.

Plastic surgery cases range from pediatric reconstructive procedures to craniofacial, peripheral nerve, microsurgery, wrist reconstruction, cancer reconstruction, burn reconstruction and cosmetic surgery.
Plastic surgery is always growing and changing. Advances are continually being made in reconstructive surgery and applied to the field. The largest challenge in Canada over the next decade will be the shrinking workforce and increasing population. There will be greater demand to train more plastic surgeons and more jobs for graduates.
We are one of the few programs in the country with a strong background in all domains of plastic surgery. Residents are exposed to a larger and more diverse clinical volume and caseload than in any other program.
Days vary depending on whether you are in the operating room or clinics. A day can start in either a reconstructive or cosmetic clinic. Surgery days also vary depending on whether they are reconstructive or cosmetic in nature.
